According to reason, it should be very cold at this time of year. Yuanbao Mountain is bare and desolate, with only some dried yellow grass remaining on the ground after the branches have been stripped away.
Every year, the wild cattle migrate before the snow falls. It’s surprising that they can still catch a wild buffalo at this time; it must be due to luck.
The buffalo has a bloody hole in its body and a very thick one. Its front leg is also broken.
Tang Xu pulled Er Bao back and glared at him, “Be honest! If you get blood on yourself, you’ll have to wash your own clothes!”
Er Bao pouted; although he stood firm, his little arms were still flailing about in excitement.
Xiao Bao was a bit scared, hiding behind Wei Dong’s leg, feeling both fearful and curious, peeking out cautiously.
The chubby boy was the most composed among them, keeping about a meter and a half distance from the dead buffalo. He held onto the old clothes of Old Wen with one hand while pointing with the other, softly asking, “Great-Grandpa, is this a cow? Why does it look different from the one at home? Why isn’t it yellow?”
The wild buffalo’s fur is a darker brown, its face is more square, and its horns are longer, more curved, and sharper, making it look a bit scary.
“This is a wild buffalo. Your father really is something; he managed to bring back such a big one in the dead of winter.”
It looked even larger than the fat pig in the backyard.
The chubby child took a small step forward but then thought over it and retreated again.
Then he looked up at his father and asked, “Dad, can I touch it?”
Wei Dong nodded, gently patting his youngest son’s soft hair, and told his oldest son, “It’s already dead, so if you want to touch it, go ahead.”
The chubby child received the permission and took two quick steps forward, reaching out to touch the buffalo’s horns. He widened his eyes, running his little hands over it, and asked with his face tilted up, “Dad, can I have a horn?”
Wei Dong didn’t even ask what he wanted the horn for and simply nodded, “Sure.”
He bent down to pick up Xiao Bao, who was peeking out from behind his leg, and handed him over to Tang Xu, saying, “Don’t put him down; it just died yesterday.”
Tang Xu held Xiao Bao and took two steps back. Seeing that Er Bao was eager to get closer, he said, “Dad is going to skin it and take it apart. Aren’t you afraid?”
Er Bao shook his head, “I’m not afraid; we can eat it!”
Tang Xu had no choice but to say, “Fine, but don’t get too close, understand?”
“Mm!” Er Bai nodded vigorously. He knew he didn’t want to wash his own clothes.
Xiao Bai was held in Tang Xu’s arms, his little arms wrapped around Tang Xu’s neck, and his head twisted backward, making his whole body contort like a twisted noodle.
He wanted his dad to hold him but also wanted to watch his father butcher the cow!
“Mm-mm~~!!!” Feeling that his dad was about to walk away while holding him, Xiao Bao immediately began to kick his legs.
Tang Xu wasn’t prepared and almost lost his grip.
His arm shook a bit, startling him, and he quickly tightened his hold, saying, “What are you doing? You’ll fall!”
Xiao Bao jumped in surprise at his voice, shaking a little.
Then he turned his head away, looking aggrieved.
Tang Xu glared at him, not softening his expression just because the child looked wronged.
Instead, he sternly scolded, “Can’t you say what you want? What if I can’t hold you steady and you fall down? What would you do then?”
Xiao Bao pouted, resting his chin on Tang Xu’s shoulder and saying nothing.
Tang Xu took a deep breath and set him down. “Do you want to watch your father butcher the cow?”
Xiao Bao nodded, looking up at him with eager eyes.
“What do you mean, you want me to accompany you?”
Xiao Bao nodded again.
Tang Xu softened his tone, raising his hand to pinch the child’s cheek, “If you want to stay, you have to help out. You can either stay in the front yard or stay here; it’s your choice.”
Xiao Bao turned his head away as Zhao Ming dragged a large wooden board over and placed it on the ground. Wei Dong, holding one of the buffalo’s horns with one hand, dragged the upper half of the wild buffalo onto the board while wielding a large cleaver that gleamed in the sunlight.
He took a step back and pressed closely against Tang Xu’s leg.
Tang Xu looked down at him, unsure whether the child was afraid or just wanting to get closer to the excitement. He couldn’t tell whose traits the child had inherited.
So, he simply bent down, picked him up, and turned to leave.
Wei Dong raised the cleaver and brought it down in one swift motion, directly chopping off the buffalo’s head.
Xiao Bao witnessed this and, scared, buried his face against Tang Xu’s neck.
Tang Xu sighed softly, gently patting his back to comfort him. “What are you afraid of? Weren’t you just saying you wanted to see? After your father finishes butchering the meat, we’ll roast some beef jerky for you to eat. You don’t have to be scared.”
Xiao Bao pouted, let out a small “um,” and obediently allowed himself to be carried back this time without struggling.
“Liu Ge’er, go get a few large basins from the kitchen and collect the offal,” Wei Dong turned to look at the sixth brother standing nearby.
Liu Ge’er quickly nodded and ran to fetch the basins.
Zhao Ming held a knife in his hand, trimming the meat while Wei Dong skinned the buffalo.
Wei Dong skillfully removed the entire hide of the wild buffalo without damaging it at all.
Old Wen, watching from the side, nodded repeatedly, praising, “Dongzi’s knife skills are impressive.”
The chubby child was not at all afraid of the scene of disembowelment, and Er Bao was even more excited, poking the bright red meat with his little wooden knife.
Old Sun, observing his actions, couldn’t help but ask, “This child has potential; don’t you plan to find a martial arts master to teach him?”
Wei Dong switched from the large knife to a smaller one, continuing to work without looking up.
“No, I don’t know who to find.”
If it weren't for Old Sun bringing it up, he and Tang Xu wouldn’t have thought of it. Mainly, there was no place to look; there wasn’t even a martial arts school in the county, let alone in the town.
Old Sun also thought about it; there wasn’t a proper place to learn martial arts here. If it were a bigger city, they could invite a few martial artists to come teach.
Er Bao held his little wooden knife, then looked at Wei Dong’s small knife, and tried to scrape it against his own hand. He noticed that it left no mark at all, it just slightly deformed the flesh where he pressed.
He poked it a few more times and pouted, “Father!”
Wei Dong looked up at him, “Hmm?”
“I want one too!” Er Bao pointed at the small knife in Wei Dong’s hand, his eyes sparkling, “Father, give it to me~”
Wei Dong raised an eyebrow, not giving him the knife. Instead, he picked him up and brought him closer, letting him cut the meat and separate the bones himself. “You’re too small; you can’t grip it properly. Whether you can cut through the meat is one thing, but you’ll definitely hurt yourself.”
“I won’t!” Er Bao shook his head.
Wei Dong turned around and picked out the smallest knife from the toolset, handing it to him. “Here.”
Old Wen and Old Sun frowned as they handed the knife to the child.
Xu Ze, Liu Ge’er, reached out to stop them.
However, Wei Dong waved his hand and said to Er Bao, who was eagerly poking the meat with the knife tip, “Don’t cry if you cut yourself.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the knife tip grazed the child’s small hand, instantly leaving a streak of blood.
Er Bao froze for a moment, staring at his left palm, which was starting to bleed, and then cried out loudly, his wailing echoing.
The chubby child jumped in surprise, realizing for the first time that his younger brother was hurt.
Wei Dong picked up Er Bao, who was crying loudly and had thrown the knife away, bringing him close. He glanced at Er Bao’s hand, which had a long cut, and a fair amount of blood was flowing.
“Do you understand why I didn’t want you to have the knife?”
Er Bao, with tears streaming down his face, pressed his hand against Wei Dong’s chest.
“It hurts, woohoo~~~~”
Wei Dong still kept a stern face and asked, “Do you still want to play with knives?”
Er Bao shook his head vigorously, “Woohoo~~~”
Only then did Wei Dong grab a clean cloth from the side to wrap around the child’s palm and then picked him up to carry him to the front yard.
Er Bao was crying and shaking; his hand hurt!

Thanks for the chapter! Some kids only learn by experience. My mom had to leave a kettle hot enough to hurt, but not to burn on the stove, so my too curious sibling learns the lesson of never getting close to the stove.
