Puppet Notes (Wearing Book) - 182

Qi Chao and Bugu arrived at the banquet among the middle group of attendees. As soon as they entered, they could feel the subtle yet probing gazes from the people present.

In the circle of master-level puppet masters, Qi Chao had always been a figure who seemed to exist only in the virtual world. Although many had never met him in person, they were intimately familiar with his accomplishments—such as treating puppets as if they were his children or his remarkable talent of being able to create S-grade puppets within just six months.

"What an enviable talent," remarked a middle-aged master puppet master. "But from the video a couple of days ago, it's clear he's still too young. Otherwise, why would he treat puppets as if they were children to be educated?"

The man looked at Qi Chao with the condescension of an elder who believed he knew better, viewing him as an immature child.

Standing nearby, the frail-looking Elliton found this amusing.

If they thought Qi Chao shouldn't treat puppets as children, they could just say so—why bring up his age?

Since watching the video Qi Chao posted a few days ago, Elliton had been eagerly anticipating meeting him.

Yet, now that Qi Chao had arrived at the banquet, Elliton felt a mix of emotions.

Elliton  silently hoped he could maintain his true self during this banquet.

Meanwhile, Qi Chao casually found a quiet corner and listened as Bugu introduced the various puppet masters present at the event.

Qi Chao's three apprentices, however, stuck to their teacher like glue, surrounding him as if they were protecting an endangered species.

Was it really necessary to guard him this closely?

Bugu glanced at the three apprentices with a hint of exasperation, then turned back to Qi Chao. "Besides the master-level puppet masters here, there are also many talented and principled ones. Letting your apprentices interact with those puppet masters can be beneficial."

The priority, of course, was to get rid of these three clingers first.

Qi Chao looked at the puppet masters Bugu had pointed out, nodded thoughtfully, and patted Yu Zhao and his companions on their shoulders. "Did you hear that? Go on now, have some proper conversations with them."

"Teacher, we’d rather stay by your side," Yu Zhao, Li Lang, and Guo Li replied almost in unison.

Their hesitation was evident—they worried that their upright teacher might be approached by malicious puppet masters in their absence.

Qi Chao had no clue what was on his apprentices' minds. Seeing them hesitate, he simply assumed they were timid and smiled encouragingly to urge them on.

Under Qi Chao’s insistence, the three apprentices reluctantly left his side. However, before departing, they pulled Bugu aside and earnestly instructed her to keep a close watch on Qi Chao.

They emphasized that if anyone approached their teacher, she must notify them immediately.

Do they really need to say this?

Bugu thought to herself. Qi Chao was her boss’s lover—there was no way she would let anyone harm him in the slightest.

"Got it. Now off you go," she said, shooing them away like swatting flies. With so many people hovering around Qi Chao, it was getting on her nerves.

Having spent some time with Bugu before, Yu Zhao, Li Lang, and Guo Li had a decent relationship with her despite her occasional brusque attitude. Realizing they had no choice, the trio reluctantly said their farewells to their teacher and left.

At last, the surrounding area quieted down. Bugu let out a sigh of relief and walked up to Qi Chao, resuming her introductions of the puppet masters at the event while subtly observing him.

To be her boss’s lover and still have three apprentices so devoted—this man undoubtedly had something extraordinary about him.

Bugu steadied her thoughts and began to explain, "Among the master-level puppet masters, there aren’t many who are truly useful. Elliton is one of them."

"He has royal blood but is considered a peripheral figure. The current emperor has a hidden illness and is unable to produce heirs. While Elliton technically has a chance to compete for the throne, his gloomy personality and poor social standing make him an unlikely candidate for succession."

Then, Bugu’s voice lowered slightly. "We’ve interacted with him before. Unlike other master-level puppet masters who are indifferent to the loss of their creations, he reacted strongly. In fact, the shock he experienced was so great that he hasn’t made a single puppet in almost five years."

Hearing this, Qi Chao glanced toward the frail and slender figure in the distance. Elliton’s cheeks were sunken, and he appeared in poor spirits, as if a barrier separated him from those around him.

In the next moment, Elliton unexpectedly looked in Qi Chao’s direction. Their eyes met briefly. Qi Chao’s expression remained composed as he calmly smiled and nodded in greeting.

Elliton hesitated, seemingly wanting to approach and say something. However, in the end, he stayed where he was without making a move.

Qi Chao paid it no mind, holding his wine glass casually and continuing to listen to Bugu’s introductions with an air of relaxed ease.

Bugu was aware that her boss, Shen Yuxi, and Qi Chao intended to confront both the Association and the royal family. Though she wasn’t entirely clear on the reasons behind it, she owed her very survival and eventual entry into the Association to Shen Yuxi’s benevolence since she was young.

At her core, Bugu understood that without Shen Yuxi, she wouldn’t exist as she did today.

Whatever Shen Yuxi sought to accomplish, Bugu and others who had benefited from her kindness would unwaveringly support her.

So, when tasked with introducing puppet masters to Qi Chao, Bugu made sure to provide every bit of useful information without holding back.

"Thank you," Qi Chao said, memorizing her introductions. After briefly pondering her words, he fell silent, standing still and quietly observing the master-level puppet masters.

Not far away, the Association President had been keeping an eye on Qi Chao ever since he entered the room. He could see Bugu talking to Qi Chao continuously, though he couldn’t make out their conversation.

However, as Bugu was a Special-Class Puppet Master for the Association, the President inferred that Qi Chao must have an inclination toward being aligned with the Association.

The President mulled over his thoughts, a warm and benevolent smile gracing his face. Leaning on his cane, he rose and walked toward Qi Chao.

He needed to finalize the experimental subject matter immediately to investigate the cause of ability-users losing their powers and regain the Emperor’s trust.

At this point, the banquet had yet to officially begin. Puppet masters were still mingling freely, taking advantage of the casual atmosphere. Once the Emperor arrived and the live broadcast commenced, the atmosphere would disappear.

Qi Chao stood where he was, not actively engaging in conversation, yet he remained a subject of quiet scrutiny by many puppet masters in the room.

When they saw the President approach Qi Chao with a smile and begin a conversation, the onlookers grew restless, desperate to eavesdrop.

However, the pair’s voices were too low, and getting any closer would breach social etiquette. Helplessly, they lingered at a polite distance, hoping to glean details later.

“President, it’s been a while,” Qi Chao said warmly, his tone filled with apparent respect. From his expression alone, it was impossible to discern his burning desire to tear the old man apart.

The President observed Qi Chao’s expression with satisfaction. In just a few words, he hinted at the matter of the ability-user base, and upon seeing Qi Chao’s apparent look of longing, the President inwardly nodded.

Qi Chao’s reaction seemed perfectly normal.

After all, who could remain indifferent when faced with the possibility of gaining extraordinary powers?

“A few days ago, I noticed someone at the base experiencing some issues. I wonder how they’re doing now?” Qi Chao asked with a smile, his tone carrying a hint of curiosity.

“I came to you precisely because of this,” the President sighed, lowering his voice. “You know, of course, that the abilities of ability-users stem from S-grade puppets.”

He subtly hinted, “If you’re interested, you could bring one of your puppets over. That would allow us to identify the source of the ability-users’ physical issues and, in time, help you enjoy the benefits as well.”

So, he wants to use my children as experimental subjects?

The amusement in Qi Chao’s eyes faded slightly. He gazed at the seemingly kind old man in front of him, his grip on his wine glass tightening. He barely managed to suppress the urge to dump its contents over the President’s head.

Did I overdo it?

Qi Chao pondered. For the President to actually believe he would sacrifice his children for the sake of obtaining abilities was almost laughable.

“What do you think?” the President asked expectantly, entirely unaware of the dark emotions surging within Qi Chao.

He couldn’t fathom anyone genuinely lacking interest in gaining extraordinary powers.

“Allow me some time to think it over,” Qi Chao replied, forcing a faint smile as he reined in his growing disdain.

There was no need to probe further.

The Association’s intentions were now glaringly clear. After the converter devices were destroyed and ability-users began losing their powers, the Association had no plans to halt their research.

Instead, they intended to continue harvesting S-grade puppets for experimentation.

This was an expected outcome.

Qi Chao lowered his gaze to the elderly man, who was two heads shorter than himself, and suddenly chuckled.

However, a wave of irritation surged within him, so strong that he couldn’t even be bothered to maintain his facade any longer.

The President immediately sensed the shift in Qi Chao’s demeanor, the wrinkles on his face tightening noticeably. After a brief pause, he turned his gaze toward Bugu, hoping to discern the cause of Qi Chao’s change in attitude through her.

Yet, Bugu’s expression remained a perfectly neutral smile. No matter how many hints the President threw her way, she acted as though she didn’t understand.

Instead, she chimed in to back up Qi Chao’s mood, delivering a pointed reminder: “Mr. President, the Emperor will be arriving in five minutes. As the President of the Association, isn’t it about time you went to greet him?”

The veiled dismissal left the President momentarily speechless. His eyes darted between Qi Chao and Bugu, unable to decipher the reason behind their attitude toward him. His expression darkened before he finally left, frustration evident on his face.

His displeasure was unmistakable, and the puppet masters observing the exchange from afar could tell that the conversation between Qi Chao and the President had not gone well.

In that instant, much of the attention on Qi Chao dissipated.

For the non-master-level puppet masters, the Association President, with his deep experience and high status, was far more worthy of allegiance than Qi Chao. Offending the Association President was as good as cutting off half of Qi Chao’s future prospects.

But this so-called "future" was something Qi Chao never wanted in the first place.

Sitting quietly in a corner, his fingers tapped rhythmically against his knee as he began revising his original plan.

Just as Shen Yuxi had once speculated, Qi Chao had never expected the Association to abandon its pursuit of ability research.

His purpose in coming here was to confirm their decision in person and then slowly work out a way to dismantle the Association and the royal family’s power from within.

Now, however, he felt his previous methods were far too slow. The mere thought of the time they would require filled him with irritation.

Qi Chao lowered his head, his deep brown eyes briefly flickering with a shadowy hue. For the first time, someone had dared to target his children.

“Teacher?”

Yu Zhao and the other two apprentices looked at him with concern. They had rushed back the moment the President approached Qi Chao, and now that the President had left, their teacher’s uncharacteristic silence only deepened their unease.

“It’s nothing,” Qi Chao replied offhandedly, his tone indifferent as he continued to contemplate how to deal with the President.

Bugu did not interrupt; instead, she lowered her head and reported everything that had just happened to Shen Yuxi, word for word.

In one corner of the venue, Elliton watched as the President left with a displeased expression, while Qi Chao remained with his head lowered, lost in thought.

He immediately realized that the conversation between Qi Chao and the President had gone badly.

This was hardly unexpected.

Qi Chao was a puppet master who genuinely cared about his creations. He could patiently resolve even the arguments between his puppets, so there was no way someone like the President, with his self-serving nature, could compare to him.

It was clear that the two would eventually fall out.

What concerned Elliton more was the President’s good relationship with the Emperor. If Qi Chao were to be framed by the President, things could take a disastrous turn.

With that in mind, Elliton watched Qi Chao for a moment. After a brief hesitation, he decided to approach him.

Elliton was the first master-level puppet master to take the initiative to speak to Qi Chao, aside from the President.

According to Bugu, Elliton was a master-level puppet master with a generally good reputation.

So, when Elliton made the move to speak to him, Qi Chao couldn’t help but be curious about his intentions.

During their subsequent conversation, Qi Chao quickly discerned Elliton’s true intention for approaching him—to warn him about the President.

“The President is extremely cunning. Nine out of ten things he says are meant to achieve his goals, drawing people into his schemes. If he invites you to do anything, it’s best not to agree. But also be cautious,” Elliton advised.

Although Elliton didn't know the specifics of their conversation, he deduced that the only topic capable of provoking such a strong reaction from the President was the matter of abilities and puppets.

Qi Chao was slightly surprised by Elliton's words. According to Bugu, Elliton was a reclusive individual who wouldn’t typically offer unsolicited advice.

“May I ask why you're willing to share this with me?” Qi Chao asked.

Elliton fell silent for a moment, his gaze distant.

After a few seconds, he spoke up, his voice lower than usual. “Maybe it’s because I was deceived into doing something I regret the most.”

As a master-level puppet master, Elliton’s regrets must have been few, but Qi Chao couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease when he thought about the dark deeds done by the Association and the royal family.

He paused for a moment, then smiled and replied, “Thank you.”

“No need,”

Elliton shook his hand slightly, his frail form almost seeming to tremble with the motion. His skin had an unhealthy pallor, almost ghostly, and the hollows of his cheeks gave him a deathly appearance, as if he might not have long to live.

Qi Chao had heard from Bugu that Elliton hadn’t made a puppet in five years. It was said that when he became a master-level puppet master, the five S-level puppets he created had all disappeared.

The disappearance was a lie. Perhaps those puppets had long since returned to the mother tree, and their abilities had been transferred to humans.

Looking at Elliton’s haggard face, Qi Chao paused for a moment before taking out his light brain. With a smile, he said, “If you don’t mind, we could add each other as friends.”

“Alright.”

Elliton had hesitated before whether to approach Qi Chao, partly out of concern that Qi Chao might be swayed by the President’s influence. If that had been the case, there would have been no need to make connections with someone like him.

But now, with Qi Chao and the President at odds, it seemed there was no harm in getting to know him.

Just as the two of them added each other as friends, the music in the venue suddenly started, and the white cameras on the walls, which had been turned off, began to flash with red lights.

The bamboo dragonfly on top of their heads lifted into the air.

[The banquet is about to begin. Please, all master-level puppet masters and future leaders of the dollmaking industry, take your seats in an orderly fashion.]

The electronic voice echoed through the hall.

The master-level puppet masters and other attendees scattered, heading toward the white long tables on either side.

In the center of the venue, a long Western-style table with a golden tablecloth had been specially prepared for the Emperor and the eleven master-level puppet masters. Only they were qualified to sit at this table.

Qi Chao and Elliton exchanged a glance before taking their seats. The seating at the long table was hierarchical. Qi Chao, a relatively new master-level puppet master, and Elliton, a puppet master who hadn’t produced any puppets in five years, were seated at the far end of the table, next to each other.

[Wow! My idols! I’m here!]

[So excited! It’s been years since I’ve seen my big brother Qi in such a formal setting. I miss him so much.]

[Qing Yu is here!]

[Wow, as expected, the first seat is reserved for the President of the Puppet Master Association. It's only right that he sits next to the Emperor!]

When the live stream began, a flood of enthusiastic puppet fans poured into the broadcast, passionately confessing their admiration for their idol puppet masters.

Most of the master-level puppet masters in attendance were experienced veterans, and at such a moment, the fans were incredibly supportive. The live stream screen was flooded with various lightboards and gifts sent by the viewers.

However, Qi Chao's popularity was equally high. Thanks to his outstanding performance in the competition, and his continuous trending presence on the light brain, his attention on the live stream was not at all inferior to that of the other master-level puppet masters.

Meanwhile, in Qi Chao's villa in the Lingjing District, Shen Yuxi and a few of the family’s puppets were watching Qi Chao on the live stream through the projection screen.

"Dad is sitting at the end of the long table," Shen Yuxi said softly, pointing to the screen.

Lan Luo looked a bit displeased.

"Sitting in the front doesn't mean anything good. The Emperor isn't a good person either. If he's sitting close to Dad, I'm more worried about Dad getting contaminated with bad luck."

The other puppets were all focused on the screen, and only Agu, who wasn't paying attention, casually said.

On the screen, the Emperor, dressed in a platinum-colored robe, looked old with his gray hair, but his posture was still straight, and his furrowed brow gave him a serious, solemn air as he recited the opening oath. He truly exuded the demeanor of a ruler.

Shen Yuxi's fingers brushed over the light brain's screen, where a message from Bugu that he had just replied to was displayed. His gaze shifted to Qi Chao and Elliton.

According to Bugu, the two of them had already added each other as friends.

This banquet indeed had many potential figures to leverage. Shen Yuxi wasn't someone who couldn't distinguish right from wrong. It was naturally a good thing that Qi Chao had found a possible partner for cooperation, but there was still a trace of displeasure in his heart.

[Wait and see, after this, follow Qi Chao's orders.]

He lowered his head and sent another message to Bugu, knowing that since Qi Chao had already initiated contact with the master-level puppet master, it meant he had already made up his mind.

What Shen Yuxi had to do was quietly wait for Qi Chao to return home.

On the other side, after the Emperor finished reading the oath, he began the procedure of awarding medals to each of the master-level puppet masters, offering them evaluations and encouragement in turn.

Qi Chao sat at the end of the table, watching as the President respectfully bowed to receive his honor.

What should have been a harmonious moment between ruler and subject felt oddly uncomfortable to Qi Chao. He found the interaction between the Emperor and the President strangely off.

After the awakening of his Mother Tree incarnation, Qi Chao's senses were far more acute than an ordinary person's. Sitting at the end of the long table, he noticed the Emperor's eyes briefly showing disdain and contempt when he looked at the President.

This subtle shift made Qi Chao raise an eyebrow.

The President's behavior was equally strange. There seemed to be a hint of unease and fear in his actions.

Qi Chao couldn't help but get lost in thought. It seemed that there was some kind of conflict between the two, likely related to the issue of the ability users.

Moreover, if his senses weren’t deceiving him, it also appeared that the Emperor himself had abilities.

His gaze darkened, and his fingers subtly moved. In the next instant, a thread of mental energy appeared from his pinky finger, slowly extending until it connected with the Emperor’s body.

Since the abilities of the ability users were gradually disappearing, it was clear that the Emperor, as an ability user, couldn't be the exception.

Awarding medals and giving evaluations was a customary procedure each year. Before leaving, when his name was called, Elliton lightly tapped the edge of Qi Chao’s table, pulling him back from his deep thoughts.

“I’m leaving first.”

“Alright, congratulations,” Qi Chao replied absentmindedly with a smile, before watching Elliton leave his seat early.

The person sitting in front of Elliton was Qing Yu, and the Emperor’s attitude towards Qing Yu was even more disdainful than his attitude towards the President.

It was obvious that even though the Emperor was awarding medals to the puppet masters, deep down, he looked down on them.

This disdain was particularly evident when he interacted with Elliton. As a member of the royal family, the Emperor’s attitude towards Elliton—someone with a distant blood relation to him—was one of clear aversion and contempt.

Elliton seemed to have known this situation long ago. After receiving his medal and pinning it to his chest, he carefully bowed in thanks before leaving the stage.

Unlike Qing Yu and the others, who lingered on the moment of glory, Elliton showed no hesitation in stepping down.

Qi Chao, meanwhile, stood up with a thoughtful look in his eyes. He walked toward the curtain, waiting for the host to call his name.

In the live stream, the audience erupted with excitement:

[Ahhh! Here comes Big Boss Qi!]

[It's been months, but Big Boss Qi’s aura is so much stronger now. Just that half-smile from below made me shudder, even through the screen.]

[+1, he’s completely different from when he’s interacting with the puppets!]

[Well, that's normal, right? Of course, his attitude will change when talking to kids vs. adults.]

[So annoying, puppets are just toys, stop calling them kids! You people who are obsessed with puppets are crazy!]

[?! If you spent more time with puppets, you’d know they’re not just toys! Watch more of Big Boss Qi's videos and you'll realize how shallow you are!]

The heated comments flooded the live stream, showcasing the different perspectives people had about Qi Chao’s relationship with his puppets. Some viewed them as mere objects, while others, deeply moved by his care and understanding, felt an emotional connection.

The online debate continued to rage on, with viewers from all over expressing their opinions. Some were enamored with Qi Chao's presence and authority, while others dismissed the importance of puppets, criticizing those who saw them as more than just toys.

Meanwhile, Qi Chao stood calmly, awaiting the moment when the Emperor would bestow the medal upon him.

The Emperor, in front of the distinguished heir of the Qi family, treated him with an unusually warm demeanor. His eyes, even, held a semblance of familial affection, as if seeing Qi Chao as a younger relative. "Young people truly are impressive. To have reached the level of a Puppet Master at such a young age... If you have the chance, you should come to see me with the President for a more thorough exchange," the Emperor remarked with genuine interest.

"Thank you, Your Majesty," Qi Chao replied respectfully, nodding in acknowledgment.

Once the medal was awarded, it was time for the dinner. During this period, everyone present was required to observe the royal etiquette—silence and formality ruled, and no one could speak until the meal concluded.

Once dinner was finished and the live broadcast was shut off, the esteemed guests could leave the hall.

As Qi Chao waited for the opportunity to leave, his sharp gaze caught sight of the President standing up and following the Emperor up to the second floor. A faint sheen of sweat appeared on the President's forehead, his expression betraying a subtle unease.

There was something off in his eyes, a barely perceptible hint of nervousness as he walked behind the Emperor, suggesting that he was apprehensive about what was to come.

At that moment, Qi Chao's instincts told him that something more was at play. The Emperor's abilities hadn't yet fully faded. The tension in the air was palpable, hinting at deeper, unseen conflicts about to unfold.

Qi Chao knew that once the Emperor's abilities had fully dissipated, the President would likely face even harsher reprimands.

He couldn't help but wonder how the President , who frequently found himself reprimanded, would react. Would he remain as loyal to the Emperor as he appeared now?

No, Qi Chao quickly corrected his thoughts. Someone like the President , who could so easily use the puppets he had created, likely didn’t have loyalty in the first place.

It made Qi Chao wonder if stirring up a bit of discord between them, turning them against each other, might be quite amusing.

With that thought, Qi Chao chuckled suddenly, catching the confused looks from Bugu and his three apprentices. Seeing their expressions, he didn’t offer an explanation, only saying, "You've all worked hard today. Tomorrow, come to my place. I'll cook for you as a reward."

Bugu, who was always cautious, was about to decline, but Qi Chao held her back. "Bugu, thank you for today. You must come tomorrow. I have something I’d like to discuss with you."

The smartest among the group was puzzled. What could Qi Chao want to discuss with her when he already had his most capable assistants at home?

Bugu looked on in confusion, but Qi Chao's insistence left her with little room to refuse.

Meanwhile, in another part of the building, the Emperor and the President arrived at the meeting room.

Just as Qi Chao had suspected, the President ’s unease stemmed from having to report on the ongoing research concerning the powers of the abilities users.

The Emperor sat high on his throne, watching as the President desperately tried to find excuses and shift the blame, only growing more displeased. His voice grew stern as he spoke, "Let’s set aside the matter of the abilities users for now. What about my own abilities? You promised me that these powers were a means of communicating with the heavens and earth."

Recalling the humiliation he had suffered earlier when the Emperor had ordered him to "get lost," the Emperor’s face flushed red with anger.

The President knelt before him, his lips trembling, unsure of what to say. He couldn’t fathom why what was meant to be a connection to the heavens had turned into a chaotic and unreasonable fiasco.

All he could do was suggest, "M-Maybe you should try again? The heavens are vast, and it’s very possible that the abilities were disrupted temporarily."

The Emperor felt a surge of frustration rising in him, but a part of him also wavered. After all, before those two failures, the connection with the heavens had indeed shown a sense of divine authority. It had been awe-inspiring.

“Fine,” the Emperor muttered, his tone softening despite the fury in his chest. “I’ll trust you once more.”

The Emperor, looking down from his elevated position, spoke in a commanding tone.

The President's heart skipped a beat. It was clear that if the connection failed again this time, and that vulgar figure appeared once more, he would surely face severe punishment.

He swallowed nervously, feeling the tension building inside him.

Anxiously, he followed the Emperor to the astrological platform. The elderly Emperor, draped in his long robe, knelt solemnly, reciting a prayer as he attempted to concentrate his mental energy to activate his abilities.

This time, however, the process was far more difficult. His mental energy wavered unpredictably, as if the signal were poor—one moment it seemed to exist, and the next, it flickered out.

The Emperor furrowed his brows, continuing to struggle as he meditated, his back drenched with sweat. After what felt like an eternity, he finally felt a faint sense of the previous connection.

When he tapped into that mysterious, almost ethereal sensation, his excitement surged, though he instinctively held himself back.

Meanwhile, back at home, Qi Chao had just returned and was busy ushering his children back to their rooms to sleep.

The children followed their usual routine—sleeping by 8 PM every night.

Tonight, due to the banquet, they had gone to bed late, and by the time they entered their rooms, it was already 10 PM.

Almost immediately, they all fell into a deep slumber as soon as their heads hit the pillows.

Xing Yu was no exception.

As a world consciousness, Xing Yu didn't require sleep. However, as a puppet, his nightly slumber was necessary for him to digest energy, and it couldn't be avoided.

At first, Xing Yu wasn't used to it, but over time, he had actually come to enjoy it.

Yet, just as he dragged his exhausted body to bed, finally managing to fall asleep around 10 PM, he suddenly heard:

【Dear heaven and earth...】

Before the human Emperor could finish his words, the world consciousness immediately shouted in anger: "Get lost!!! If I hear your voice again, I’ll skin you alive!!!"

Emperor: ...

The oblivious President saw the Emperor's face turn pale, immediately realizing something was terribly wrong.

His own face turned ashen with fear. It was over. It seemed he was going to face punishment after all.
