Old Wen glared, panting heavily, and let out several grunts in Old Wu's direction.
It was none of Old Sun's business, so he was happy to just watch the drama unfold.
But soon.
“Lord Sun looked noticeably better than he had years ago. Your face is rounder and healthier”
The implication was clear: You've let yourself go.
Unlike Old Wen, Old Sun wasn't as angry.
In fact, he seemed to agree. After taking a bite of a meat bun, leaving grease smeared on the corner of his mouth, he nodded and said, "Life is very carefree these days—there’s plenty to eat and drink. Naturally, you stay happy and relaxed. Life is too comfortable. Doctor Wu, if you stay a few days, you'll understand the joy of it."
Old Wen snorted, picked up his bowl, and resumed eating his braised dish. "Just don't get too comfortable and refuse to leave."
Tang Xu, listening from the side, couldn't help but laugh to himself, thinking that the house was only going to get livelier from now on.
After the meal, the three children clung to Wei Dong, pestering him to tell them stories. Xiao Bao, in particular, completely monopolized Wei Dong's lap, squeezing his two older brothers to the side, insisting on being held by his father no matter what.
The way he clung so adorably made Tang Xu roll his eyes, and couldn't help but pinch his fleshy butt.
Xiao Bao felt the pinch and, with a pained expression, pouted and looked at his dad with teary eyes.
“Get down and let your father take a bath,” Tang Xu said, pointing to the ground and giving him a stern look.
This youngest son of his was growing more and more spoiled by the day. The whole family pampered him endlessly, especially Wei Dong, whose doting made Tang Xu grit his teeth in frustration at times.
Xiao Bao clung to Wei Dong’s neck with both arms, whining, “I want Father to hold me~”
“Wei Baobei, get down. Don’t make me say it again.” Tang Xu’s expression darkened, and his voice grew sharper.
Xiao Bao shrank back, his eyes welling up with tears.
But he knew that when Dad really got angry, not even his father’s protection would save him from a sore bottom!
Sniffling, he pouted and reluctantly wiggled his legs to show he was ready to get down.
Wei Dong placed him on the ground, only to straighten up and be met with a glare from his husband.
Wei Dong chuckled, raising a hand to gently pinch Tang Xu's neck. “I’m going to take a bath. You three, go back to your rooms. I’ll come and tell you stories later.”
Tang Xu snorted lightly and pointed at the three little ones, saying, “Hurry back to your rooms and get in bed! If anyone disobeys, I’ll spank them!”
The chubby boy quickly grabbed Xiao Bao’s hand and said, “Bao’er, run!”
Er Bao laughed loudly as he dashed off. Xiao Bao was dragged along by his older brother for a couple of steps, but he kept glancing back at Wei Dong.
When he saw his father waving goodbye, he finally let himself be pulled out of the room.
Tang Xu sighed, turning to Wei Dong with a dissatisfied look. “Can you stop spoiling him so much next time? I—mmph, mmph…”
The rest of his words were swallowed up.
The kiss left him breathless, and when Wei Dong finally let him go, Tang Xu nearly collapsed from weak knees.
Wei Dong pulled him into his arms, nuzzling his face against Tang Xu’s neck. “I missed you.”
Leaning against the man’s firm chest, Tang Xu pouted slightly and softened his voice. “I missed you too. I haven’t been sleeping well these past few days, I’ve been waiting for you to come back.”
Wei Dong kissed him lightly. “I’ll keep you company tonight.”
Tang Xu rolled his eyes at him. Keep him company?
He’d be lucky if he didn’t get completely worn out by the end of the night!
After all, they were a married couple, and Tang Xu knew all too well what his husband was like.
With guests at home and the things Wei Dong had brought back needing to be sorted, the two of them didn’t have much time to linger. After Wei Dong finished his bath, he went to coax the three children into taking their afternoon nap, while Tang Xu prepared a room for Doctor Wu and his group.
“Brother, I have two quilts over here,” Tang Yang called out from the window, waving at Tang Xu. “Xiao Xi said he has a new kang quilt on his side.”
Tang Xu nodded. “Bring them all over.”
Since the family often hosted guests, they had plenty of bedding ready.
In Old Wen’s room, Old Wu sat at the edge of the kang bed, directing his servant to place the clothes they had brought into the cabinet.
While doing so, he chatted away: “Xu Ge’re’s cooking is quite good. While it’s not particularly fancy, the taste is excellent.”
Old Wen chuckled dryly. “If you like fancy food so much, why didn’t you bring your own chef along?”
“That wouldn’t do. We were traveling for a long trip—why bring so many people along?” Old Wu replied cheerfully, unbothered by the jab.
Old Wen ignored him. After finishing the chrysanthemum tea in his cup, he slipped off his shoes, climbed onto the kang, and yawned. “I’m going to take a nap. Are you sleeping too?”
Wu Liu, having finished organizing the clothes, glanced at Old Wu. “Master, you should rest for a while too.”
Old Wu nodded. “Go back and rest. Don’t worry about me.”
Once Wu Liu left, Old Wu climbed onto the kang as well, settling on the other side. Despite the weariness of the journey, the old gentleman seemed in good spirits.
Lying on the kang, he began reminiscing aloud about the past.
Old Wen responded half-heartedly to a few remarks before drifting off to sleep. He had long been accustomed to taking afternoon naps, so when the time came, drowsiness took over naturally.
Seeing that Old Wen was asleep, Old Wu closed his eyes as well, and before long, he too had fallen asleep.
Meanwhile, Wu Liu and Wu Qi, also lying on the kang, didn’t chat much. They soon dozed off, each keeping to themselves.
Tang Xu, however, was busy with four young helpers, unpacking the boxes Wei Dong had brought back. They opened the lids and carefully took out the contents one by one.
“This box is full of toys for the kids,” said Liu Ge’er, glancing up at Tang Xu.
Tang Xu acknowledged with a hum, his eyes landing on another box filled with rolls of fabric. He reached out to touch it, finding it smooth and cool to the touch—clearly made of silk.
“Good stuff,” he remarked.
Xu Ze leaned over and touched it as well, exclaiming, “If this were made into clothes, it’d feel so cool to wear!”
Although Wei Dong had previously purchased fabric mixed with silk, this was on a whole different level. It was obviously high-quality and expensive.
The vivid colors, intricate embroidered patterns, and overall appearance of each roll made them exceptionally eye-catching.
“Do you like it?” Tang Xu asked with a smile.
Xu Ze nodded honestly.
“If you like it, I’ll cut some pieces for you to take home and make clothes,” Tang Xu offered. He was never stingy; fabric was meant to be used for making clothes, not left to sit around and get moth-eaten.
Xu Ze quickly shook his head. “No need, no need. I wouldn’t have many chances to wear it anyway. Better to save it for making clothes for the kids—they can’t stand the heat.”
Tang Xu chuckled but said no more. He thought to himself that once the fabric was cut, Xu Ze wouldn’t have a choice but to take some.
Meanwhile, in the children’s room, Wei Dong was telling stories about the sights and experiences from his journey.
Xiao Bao, already sleepy, lay on his chest, his eyes fluttering open and shut as he fought off sleep.
Er Bao, however, had already been lulled into soft snores. The eldest, Da Bao, leaned over the railing of the upper bunk, looking down at his father and asking, “Father, did you run into any bandits?”
Wei Dong chuckled softly, patting Xiao Bao’s back with one hand. “There aren’t that many bandits. Go to sleep now; I’ll tell you more after you’ve rested.”
The chubby boy responded with an “Oh,” then rolled over and lay down properly.
Wei Dong glanced down at Xiao Bao, who had finally drifted off to sleep. Gently, he placed him beside Er Bao, adjusted their positions, and patted their backs lightly until they were sound asleep.
Then he quietly got up and slipped out of the room.
Wei Dong headed to the backyard, where he saw that Tang Xu and the others had already unpacked all the boxes. “Leave three rolls of that fabric,” he said.
“Hm?” Tang Xu looked up at him.
“I’ll send them as gifts,” Wei Dong explained.
Tang Xu nodded without asking further questions. He understood that smooth business dealings often required maintaining certain relationships, and Wei Dong knew how to handle such matters.
“You go get some rest. We’ve got things under control here,” Tang Xu said, gently pushing him back toward the house. “We can talk about everything else after you’ve slept.”
Wei Dong held his hand and gave it a squeeze, clearly signaling that he wanted to stay and keep him company.
Tang Xu rolled his eyes. “Go on, go on! Go sleep by yourself!”
In broad daylight, what’s there to accompany him for?
