Shen Yu's heart skipped a beat.
Cheng Mofei was sleeping on the outer side of the bed, grinning as he gave Xiao Xiong a “What’s up with that?” expression.
He mischievously draped one arm around Shen Yu, saying without hesitation, "Don’t you have your own bed partner?"
Shen Yu: "…"
You straight guys…
Xiao Xiong immediately turned around and climbed onto Sun Xinghe's bed.
Sun Xinghe kicked him with a laugh, "Don’t crush my bed. Wait until you lose 30 pounds before talking."
Xiao Xiong lay down on his own bed, hugging his body-sized pillow in frustration.
This winter, he would definitely lose weight and amaze everyone.
After the playful banter, Shen Yu picked up his phone, took a photo of the blanket covering him, and sent a message to his mom.
Shen Yu: 【The blanket is really warm】
Shen Yu: 【Photo】
His mom hadn't gone to sleep yet and replied: 【As long as it's warm, the heating should be turned on next month, so it won’t be cold anymore. Who are you sleeping with?】
Clearly, she had noticed there were two people under the blanket in the photo.
Shen Yu curved his eyes and replied: 【With Xiao Cheng】
Mom: 【You two have a really good relationship.】
Cheng Mofei was lying very close to him, and since he didn’t deliberately hide the phone screen, he naturally saw the chat between Shen Yu and his mom.
Cheng Mofei secretly felt pleased.
The best kind of relationship between good brothers is one where both families know each other.
Cheng Mofei was already imagining that when Shen Yu comes to stay in Yancheng City in the future, and other friends invite him to hang out, their moms will be worried.
But when he invites Shen Yu, his mom will just agree without a second thought.
So satisfying.
…
The blanket his mom sent was really warm, and Cheng Mofei was warm by his side too.
That night, it suddenly started raining outside, and the temperature dropped. But Shen Yu didn’t feel cold at all.
A new week began, and most of the students were still immersed from the weekend, and were sluggish and tired, but Shen Yu felt great.
In the first experiment class of the week, the teacher started letting them conduct their own experiments.
The experiment required two people to work together, and Shen Yu was paired with a boy whose student number was close to his.
The boy's name was Fang Xiaoming, a simple and easy-to-remember name. He was a bit of a clown and had ith an interesting way of speaking. He had participated in the logistics work for the orientation event, so Shen Yu had spoken to him before and they were somewhat acquainted.
By the end of the experiment, Fang Xiaoming had become Shen Yu's devoted fan.
Why? Because Shen Yu did the experiment so incredibly well. His movements were fast and precise, and there were no hiccups at all. Even the teacher praised him repeatedly.
As expected, they were the first group to finish the experiment.
Once the experiment was done, the data recorded, and the teacher confirmed everything, they were free to leave. However, Shen Yu didn't leave right away. Instead, he sat in his seat and began writing his experiment report.
Cheng Mofei was on duty for the student council tonight and had some official business to take care of. He wasn’t sure when he would be done.
He thought that if he finished early, he could go out for a late-night snack with Cheng Mofei. If the experiment class ended and Cheng Mofei hadn’t finished yet, he would just go back to the dorm first.
He didn’t tell Cheng Mofei about this, though, because he didn’t want it to be too obvious that he was trying to make plans with him.
Fang Xiaoming, fearing that it might get too cold later, left after finishing the experiment.
Before leaving, he didn’t forget to say to Shen Yu, “Brother Shen, let me take a look at your experiment report once it’s done.”
Shen Yu smiled and gave him an "OK" gesture. “No problem.”
While working on the report, some other classmates came over to ask Shen Yu for help with certain experiment procedures, and he patiently guided them.
Meng Li, however, didn’t approach him again.
Or rather, since a week ago, when they were rehearsing for the orientation event, Meng Li had stopped trying to strike up conversations with him, returning to a simple, ordinary classmate relationship.
The reason was simple—on the night he had promised Meng Li he would run for the host position, Shen Yu had secretly posted a moment visible only to Meng Li.
The content of the moment was simple, just a single sentence: "When will the person I’ve liked for so many years finally be with me?"
Although it was a bit deliberate, it avoided the awkwardness of confrontation and honesty, while also allowing the other person to pull back in time and not waste any more time on him.
At the same time, it was Shen Yu’s true feeling.
Unfortunately, by the time the experiment class was announced as over and Shen Yu had completed about seventy or eighty percent of his report, there was still no word from Cheng Mofei.
Shen Yu had no choice but to pack up, help the two classmates responsible for cleanup with the teacher, and lock the door as he left the laboratory.
The experiment teacher had a particularly good impression of Shen Yu and spoke to him all the way out.
When Shen Yu arrived at the lobby of the experimental building, his gaze subconsciously fell on the two pots of ornamental oranges by the door. They were empty now, with no familiar figures in sight.
The last time, Cheng Mofei had praised the experimental building while he was with Shen Yu, mentioning how it had taste, with oranges planted and good symbolism.
Shen Yu pursed his lips, greeted the teacher, and left the building.
The sky had already darkened completely. The streetlights on campus were on, but it still felt dim, the ground damp from the rain that had fallen a few days ago. The wet ground was cut by tree shadows, and in some places, the light was reflected in broken pieces.
Because of his night blindness, Shen Yu didn’t like this kind of environment. He took off his black-rimmed glasses, which were a bit uncomfortable on his nose, and tucked them into his pocket.
He walked toward the dormitory, staying within the brightest spot lit by the streetlights.
Seeing this, Cheng Mofei, who was sitting on the bench under a large tree outside the experimental building, stood up. He noticed that Shen Yu didn’t seem to have seen him, so he quietly followed behind him.
Cheng Mofei indeed had his student council duties tonight, but they had ended fairly early. He had a few simple tasks to handle, which he had been taking care of on his phone.
He figured he could either handle the work in the student council office or come to the experimental building, wait for Shen Yu, and take care of it there. After thinking for a moment, he decided to come directly.
He didn’t tell Shen Yu, partly because he wanted to tease him a bit, and partly because he was worried about that girl who had approached Shen Yu after last week's experiment class.
He didn’t want to “block” Shen Yu’s chance at romance.
Although Shen Yu had said he wasn’t planning to date anyone at the moment, Cheng Mofei didn’t entirely believe it. It could just be something Shen Yu said casually, or maybe he was too shy to admit it—he didn’t truly take his words at face value.
There were so many people who wanted to flirt with Shen Yu, and who knew, maybe one day Shen Yu’s heart would be stolen away.
Cheng Mofei thought to himself, if Shen Yu was leaving tonight with that girl for a date, he’d just go straight back to the dorm and wait for Shen Yu to come back so he could “be lenient to those who confess and be severe to those who resist.”
Their relationship was already so close—Shen Yu couldn’t just wait until he had a partner to tell him, right?
Would they still be considered good brothers if this happened?
If Cheng Mofei had a crush, he would definitely tell Shen Yu the first chance he got.
Fortunately, Shen Yu left alone tonight.
After following for a while, Cheng Mofei was completely sure that Shen Yu hadn’t noticed him.
Cheng Mofei wasn’t childish enough to suddenly rush up and tap Shen Yu on the shoulder to scare him.
What if he actually scared Shen Yu? Scaring people could literally be life-threatening.
Instead, Cheng Mofei just quickened his pace and gradually closed the distance between them.
As Shen Yu walked, he habitually lowered his head slightly, his gaze also directed downwards, to avoid the awkwardness of making eye contact with anyone walking toward him.
Soon, he noticed that his shadow on the ground seemed to have a "problem."
In the shadow, a pair of rabbit ears suddenly sprouted from the top of his head. Soon, the rabbit ears turned into bear ears, and then shrank even smaller...
The cause of all this was another shadow.
Shen Yu abruptly stopped in his tracks, turned around, and immediately saw Cheng Mofei, who was striking an exaggerated pose with both hands raised.
Cheng Mofei met his gaze, froze for a moment, then flashed him a carefree grin. He brought his curled fingers back to Shen Yu’s head, causing his shadow to sprout another pair of cute, little round ears.
“Doesn’t it look like hamster ears?”
Shen Yu felt his heart pounding violently in his chest, shaking everything inside him, even making his eardrums buzz.
A road he thought he would walk alone was suddenly interrupted by the very person he most wanted to see.
That person had also covered this road with flowers, personally picking them and bringing them to his feet.
Shen Yu struggled to regain his voice and asked, "How come you're here?"
Cheng Mofei casually lied, "I finished my shift and happened to see you."
Since this was one of the usual paths to the dormitory, Shen Yu didn’t suspect anything.
Seeing Cheng Mofei still foolishly holding his hands up, adding ears to Shen Yu's shadow, Shen Yu's eyes curved into a smile. He pushed Cheng Mofei’s hands onto his own head and said, "You’re Momo’s dad. You’re the hamster."
But Cheng Mofei didn’t play along. Instead, he placed his hands back on Shen Yu’s head and moved them around a little, causing the hamster ears in the shadow to wiggle.
"You’re its only godfather."
Shen Yu’s heart skipped a beat, and he asked, "What about Xiao Xiong and Xinghe?"
The two of them liked the little hamster too. They were always crowding around the cage, kissing it and buying lots of snacks.
Cheng Mofei replied, "Those two little rascals... by seniority, they should call Momo 'uncle.' And by the way, they still owe me two sugar tangerines from last time."
Shen Yu couldn’t help but laugh, then turned his steps, "Shall we go?"
Cheng Mofei lowered his hand, instinctively asking, "Where to?"
Shen Yu replied, "To the school gate, for a late-night snack. I'll buy you some sugar tangerines."
Cheng Mofei obediently followed him.
Tonight, they didn’t have the usual Fuding meat slices. Instead, they bought a box of soft, fluffy wolf-tooth potatoes, sprinkled with fragrant seasoning, which they could eat together with skewers.
In addition, they also bought a small bag of sugar tangerines.
After buying all of this, just as they were about to head back to school, Cheng Mofei suddenly tugged at Shen Yu's sleeve and said, "Is that the son of your mom's current husband and his ex-wife?"
It was a bit confusing, but Shen Yu understood that Cheng Mofei was referring to Ning Que. He followed Cheng Mofei’s gaze.
It was indeed Ning Que.
Ning Que was standing next to a boy who was about a head shorter than him. They were holding hands and talking to each other.
Shen Yu’s gaydar immediately went off.
