Shen Yu was sure that Cheng Mofei did not know how to play Mahjong.
In the previous life, during the New Year, when they went to the Cheng family to visit relatives, some of the elders invited them to play Mahjong.
However, both of them didn't know how to play and had no interest in it, so they left shortly after.
A thirty-year-old Cheng Mofei couldn’t play Mahjong, and it was even more unlikely for a nineteen-year-old Cheng Mofei to know how.
Even though his early arrival might have changed some things, they had lived together for a long time, and there was no sign that Cheng Mofei had learned to play Mahjong.
But now, the nineteen-year-old Cheng Mofei had given a definite response. The truth was clear, he was lying.
Why lie?
Was he afraid that if he admitted he couldn’t play, they wouldn’t let him join?
Previously, Cheng Mofei had deliberately distanced himself from Tan Feng, who was hanging out with Han Xuan, because of his homophobia.
Now, he has become friends with Han Xuan, and in the future, there might be more interactions with this couple.
Cheng Mofei wasn’t as homophobic as before, and it seemed like he was trying to ease the relationship between them a bit.
Shen Yu didn’t expose him. He nodded, lowered his head, and replied to Han Xuan with a message: [Okay, I'll join. I just asked Cheng Mofei, and he can play too.]
Han Xuan was very happy: [Great, we're all set. I’ll go tell my partner, see you tomorrow!]
Shen Yu: [See you tomorrow.]
When Shen Yu went into the bathroom with his clothes, Cheng Mofei immediately put the little hamster back into its cage and picked up his phone.
He started downloading a Mahjong app while also searching for the rules and strategies for Sichuan Mahjong.
…
By the time Shen Yu finished his shower and came out, Cheng Mofei had already climbed onto the bed, wearing headphones and holding the phone horizontally, looking like he was playing a game, with a serious expression on his face.
Shen Yu understood immediately and couldn’t help but curve his lips.
He was clearly cramming to learn Mahjong at the last minute.
Shen Yu didn’t intentionally tease or disturb him.
Cheng Mofei still had a competition tomorrow, but it was in the afternoon, so he could stay up a bit late tonight, though not too late.
Shen Yu sat down and calmly began writing his diary for the day. After the washing machine in the bathroom finished its cycle, he hung up all the clothes that he and Cheng Mofei had changed out of before climbing into bed.
During this time, Xiao Xiong finished his battle in the online game, shut down his computer, and saw Cheng Mofei holding his phone horizontally, looking like he was playing a game. He eagerly asked, "Wanna play some King of Glory?"
Cheng Mofei didn’t even look up, "Not playing."
Xiao Xiong immediately walked over to the side of his bed, curious, and asked, "What game are you playing?"
Cheng Mofei turned over, blocking his view of the screen, and casually answered, "A brain teaser game."
"What's it called? I wanna play too." Xiao Xiong, being a game enthusiast, was interested in most games.
Cheng Mofei: "..."
Cheng Mofei quickly came up with a response: "Cyber Basketball."
Xiao Xiong, who was allergic to sports, immediately gave up, "Oh, never mind then."
While talking to Xiao Xiong, Cheng Mofei lost again in Mahjong. This time, his chips were completely wiped out, and he couldn’t start the next round.
The screen promptly displayed a very considerate recharge prompt in the center.
Cheng Mofei didn’t hesitate and directly paid for the recharge.
...
The next day, Cheng Mofei didn’t wake up until near noon.
Shen Yu had already finished his volunteer work in the morning and brought him lunch, neatly packed.
After staying up late for special training the night before, Cheng Mofei felt full of energy now.
A small game of Mahjong, what could it do to him?
After the afternoon competition ended, the two of them first went to a hair salon to get haircuts. Afterward, they met up with the other two at the entrance of the Mahjong hall.
For dinner, they ordered takeout to enjoy in the private room of the Mahjong hall while playing.
The haircut took a little longer than expected, so by the time they arrived at the Mahjong hall, Han Xuan and Tan Feng were already sitting on the sofa waiting for them.
The shop owner, a woman in her thirties, was smiling and chatting with them, looking quite familiar.
When Shen Yu and Cheng Mofei arrived, Han Xuan and Tan Feng quickly finished their conversation, stood up, and looked toward them.
Shen Yu and Cheng Mofei walked side by side, and Shen Yu couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Cheng Mofei’s reaction.
After everything that had happened recently, Cheng Mofei no longer felt as awkward around the two of them as he did last time.
After listening to what Shen Yu had described, Han Xuan had taken the initiative to strike up a conversation as a way to remind Cheng Mofei that he was a good guy.
As for Tan Feng, there was no need to say much. Cheng Mofei had played basketball with him for nearly a semester.
They weren’t particularly close, but they knew each other well enough—Tan Feng had good sportsmanship and a nice personality.
It seemed that what Cheng Mofei had truly feared were not good homosexuals, but bad ones.
Before long, the distance between the four of them had closed to less than half a meter.
Tan Feng enthusiastically patted Cheng Mofei’s shoulder, "It's been a long time since we played basketball together. Who would’ve thought we'd end up playing Mahjong together instead?"
Cheng Mofei gave an awkward yet polite smile, "I heard you were short one person, so I came to make up the numbers."
"Let's go, the room is upstairs."
The four of them headed upstairs together.
As soon as they sat down, Han Xuan began explaining the rules of Sichuan Mahjong to Shen Yu.
He turned to Cheng Mofei and Tan Feng, saying, "You two can chat for a bit and order some takeout. Once I finish teaching Shen Yu, we'll start playing."
Cheng Mofei: "?"
Wait a minute... So Shen Yu doesn’t know how to play Mahjong either?!
Then what was the point of his late-night cram session?
Was he really just being diligent??
Cheng Mofei was left speechless, feeling a bit baffled.
At this point, Cheng Mofei really could have used a quick-acting heart-saving pill.
Tan Feng didn’t notice anything unusual and, while opening the takeout app on his phone, said, "Wow, I didn't know you could play Sichuan Mahjong. You're impressive. I also learned it from Xiao Xuan, it took him a long time to teach me."
Unknowingly, Cheng Mofei was hit by another invisible arrow. He forced a smile and replied, "Heh, it’s nothing. I just know a little."
Shen Yu, who was still learning Mahjong, almost burst out laughing. He tried hard to cover his upturned lips by quickly raising his hand.
Tan Feng, holding his phone showing the takeout app, leaned toward Han Xuan and instinctively used an affectionate term: "Baby, what do you want to eat tonight?"
Cheng Mofei, who was scrolling through his phone, suddenly froze.
He had gotten used to hearing "baby" between Sun Xinghe and his girlfriend when they were on a video call, so hearing a guy call another guy "baby" didn’t make him feel uncomfortable.
In his experience, he never saw those gross kinds of interactions with the friends he knew, so he didn't associate the term with anything unpleasant.
But for some reason, his mind uncontrollably flashed back to that day when they were playing games at his house. He had shamelessly called Shen Yu "baby" in the same way Sun Xinghe did.
He didn’t call out just once, he had called him "baby" countless times.
...
At that time, Shen Yu must have been speechless, thinking that Cheng Mofei was frivolous and lacked a sense of boundaries.
After hearing this, Han Xuan pulled out his phone from his pocket and tossed it to Tan Feng. "Just keep an eye on it. I think I still have some coupons in my phone. See which one’s more cost-effective."
Tan Feng took the phone and sat back down next to Cheng Mofei.
Cheng Mofei slowly raised his gaze, locking onto the two phones in Tan Feng’s hands. His lips pressed together.
Both phones had matching couple phone cases.
One had a winter snow scene, and the other an autumn maple forest.
Though there wasn’t a very strong "couple interaction" vibe, the style was clearly part of the same series, it is definitely couple-themed.
Cheng Mofei quickly glanced at Shen Yu's orange phone case lying on the table and couldn’t help but feel a little relieved.
When he had bought the phone cases for Shen Yu, there had actually been another option, a strawberry-patterned one that said "Berry No Worries."
At that time he hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should buy two different designs for easy distinction.
But then he thought, if their relationship was good, they should have matching ones.
Plus, Shen Yu never showed any particular liking for strawberries. In the end, he went with two of the "Big Orange Prosperity" designs.
Thank goodness, otherwise, the two of them might have been gossiped about for using a couple phone cases.
Shen Yu might have even changed his phone case to avoid any misunderstandings.
