Brother, you smell good - 90

It wasn’t the kind of heart-wrenching cry that the whole world could hear, just a soft whimper, like the whimpering of a little animal. Tears hovered halfway in his eyes, some falling, while his small mouth pouted in grievance.

The sourness was unbearable, but he held it in and didn’t spit it out.

Spitting it out would dirty the floor and his clothes—that wouldn’t be good.

Cheng Xiaofei sat on pins and needles, nearly dying of anxiety, not knowing what had happened.

Fortunately, the teacher noticed the unusual quiet in this corner and rushed over immediately.

This season’s oranges were indeed not sweet—most of them were sour.

Successfully spitting the unbearably sour orange into the trash can and rinsing his mouth, little Shen Yu finally stopped crying. But his teeth had gone soft from the sourness, making him very uncomfortable.

After learning the truth, Cheng Xiaofei sat at his seat in silence, feeling somewhat withdrawn. He cautiously kept an eye on Shen Yu while pondering the great questions of life.

He loved oranges the most—whether sour or sweet, he liked them all. They were all delicious.

In his subconscious mind, giving his favorite orange to another child was the most sincere gesture—he truly, truly wanted to be friends.

But his little hamster brother had been brought to tears by the sourness of his orange…

Cheng Xiaofei felt uneasy, guilty, and a little wronged.

Finally, after all the tears on Shen Yu’s face were wiped away, he returned, holding the half-eaten orange, and sat back down beside Cheng Xiaofei.

Cheng Xiaofei sat up straight, but his gaze kept drifting toward him.

The little hamster brother hadn’t thrown away the leftover orange… and he hadn’t moved his small stool away either…

With the teacher’s help, Shen Yu wrapped the remaining orange in a tissue and carefully placed it into his small backpack.

Then, he reached into his bag, took out a few candies, and handed them to the boy beside him.

"Brother Fei, here, candy for you."

He had specially kept these candies in his little backpack, intending to share them with the new friends he made at kindergarten.

He knew some fruits were sour. Though he didn’t like eating them himself, his mom loved them, so he didn’t think Cheng Xiaofei was trying to prank him by giving him the orange.

Cheng Xiaofei was completely stunned. He hesitantly accepted the candy, feeling a little at a loss.

He had thought he would be disliked, even avoided…

But not only was he not rejected, he even received candy in return.

Wuwu, this little hamster brother was truly such a kind and wonderful friend. As his big brother, he would definitely look out for him from now on!

Because his teeth had gone soft from the sourness, Shen Yu had little appetite at lunchtime.

It was Shen Yu’s first day having lunch at kindergarten. After just a few bites, he stopped eating, which made the teacher anxious.

But soon, Cheng Xiaofei took the initiative to pick up Shen Yu’s spoon and started feeding him bit by bit.

Even though his tooth was still sore from the sourness, Shen Yu obediently ate the food since another child was feeding him. He carefully chewed using the other side of his mouth that hadn’t been affected.

Cheng Xiaofei hadn’t even finished his own meal yet, but he fed himself a spoonful, then gave Shen Yu a spoonful, and the two of them shared their lunch together. Before long, their bowls were empty.

Feeling gratified, the teacher recorded a short video and sent it to both of their parents, briefly explaining what had happened.

At noon, most of the children took their nap at kindergarten.

It was Shen Yu’s first time napping outside of his home, so he became a focus of the teacher’s attention.

Shen Yu was very obedient. After taking off his outerwear and lying under the blanket, he still couldn’t fall asleep.

He was only four years old and had always been lulled to sleep by bedtime stories from his family. He had never slept alone outside before, so it was understandable that he was having trouble.

The teacher tried to soothe him for a long time, but it didn’t have much effect.

On the nearby bed, Cheng Xiaofei was lying on his side, eyes half-closed, pretending to sleep while secretly observing everything. Seeing Shen Yu struggling to sleep, he immediately wriggled out of his own blanket, quickly padding barefoot over to Shen Yu’s bed.

Just as the teacher was about to pick him up and return him to his own bed, he had already climbed onto Shen Yu’s mattress and eagerly volunteered, “Teacher, I’ll help put little hamster to sleep!”

Teacher: “?”

Little Hamster…?

While the teacher was still in shock, Cheng Xiaofei had already slipped under Shen Yu’s blanket.

The two little ones were so small that a single pillow was enough for both of them to share.

Cheng Xiaofei reached out an arm and half-hugged Shen Yu, imitating how his parents usually comforted him to sleep. He gently patted Shen Yu’s back and whispered, “Close your eyes, Brother Fei will sleep with you.”

Shen Yu blinked, then obediently closed his eyes. Before long, his breathing evened out, and he had successfully fallen asleep.

The teacher, who had been debating whether to intervene, was left speechless: “…”

As he continued patting, Cheng Xiaofei got sleepy himself and soon dozed off alongside Shen Yu.

Before long, the two little ones had unconsciously snuggled closer together in their sleep, looking absolutely adorable.

The teacher took a photo of the sleeping children and sent it to both sets of parents, briefly explaining what had happened.

That afternoon, Cheng Mofei’s parents arrived with two sticks of cotton candy, intending to give one to the little boy their son had accidentally made cry.

The two kids were getting along so well—who knew? They might just become great friends in the future.

At the entrance of the kindergarten, they saw their son holding the hand of a little boy and walking towards them from a distance

The little one was adorable—slightly shorter and smaller than their own son, with fair skin and an especially well-behaved appearance.

At the same time, on the other side, Shen Xunyan and Ning Boren were watching the two children holding hands.

It wasn’t until the kids stepped out of the kindergarten gate that both sets of parents realized each other’s identities.

Receiving the cotton candy, Shen Yu carefully held the stick with both hands and sweetly said, “Thank you, Uncle and Auntie.”

Cheng Mofei’s parents nearly melted on the spot.

Their own son was indeed cute, but he had already reached the age where even dogs would find him troublesome. Whenever he had free time, he was up to some kind of mischief, constantly “tearing the house apart” and making their lives both frustrating and joyful.

Now, seeing someone else’s well-behaved little angel, they couldn’t help but feel a wave of tenderness in their hearts.

On the way home, Cheng Xiaofei enthusiastically introduced his newly acquired "little hamster brother" to his parents.

Cheng Mofei’s mom and dad could only feel both helpless and amused.

The next day, Shen Yu arrived at kindergarten with a jar of sweet oranges cooked in sugar water. He handed Cheng Xiaofei a small spoon and shared the treat with him.

His mom had made it using the sour oranges Cheng Xiaofei had given him the day before. She had carefully removed all the white membranes and cooked them in sugar water until they were no longer sour—now they were sweet and delicious.

Cheng Xiaofei squinted his eyes in delight as he ate.

He hadn’t expected that not only had Shen Yu not thrown away the sour orange he had given him, but he had turned it into something so tasty.

Being able to be friends with his little hamster brother was the best thing ever!

A few days later, the two little ones once again walked out of kindergarten hand in hand.

Their mothers, smiling warmly, exchanged contact information, planning to nurture their children's budding friendship outside school.

Since it was the weekend, Cheng Xiaofei excitedly used his mom’s phone to call Shen Yu, inviting him over to play.

He had never invited a friend from kindergarten to his house before—the little hamster brother was the first.

Even though he had many friends, he especially enjoyed playing with Shen Yu.

Without hesitation, Shen Xunyan sent Shen Yu over right away.

Still a little worried, she decided to stay as well. She and Cheng Mofei’s mom busied themselves in the garden, tending to the flowers while keeping an eye on the two little ones.

To welcome his little hamster brother, Cheng Xiaofei dug out all the toys he owned.

The two of them first sat on the soft mats inside the baby playpen, spending a long time piecing together toys. Then, they played with toy cars and airplanes for a while.

After that, Cheng Xiaofei had Shen Yu sit on his wiggle car while he pulled him along for a grand tour around the house…

When they passed by the garden, the two mothers exchanged a glance and smiled helplessly.

The children's room was left in complete chaos, but the two little ones had an absolute blast.

Before leaving, Shen Yu and Cheng Xiaofei tidied up the room together. Shen Yu then extended an invitation, asking Cheng Xiaofei to visit his house the following weekend.

On the way home, Shen Yu, exhausted from all the fun, curled up in Shen Xunyan's arms and fell asleep.

A week passed quickly, and Cheng Xiaofei arrived at Shen Yu’s house as promised.

Ning Que had a weekend enrichment class, one he had been attending since his time at his grandparents' house, so he was already out when Cheng Xiaofei arrived. The two didn’t get a chance to meet.

Shen Yu enthusiastically dug out all of his toys, and the two spent almost the entire day playing together.

Shen Yu didn’t have as many toys as Cheng Xiaofei, but he certainly had enough. Some of the toys were even Ning Que’s old ones, almost brand new, and they had brought them over for Shen Yu to play with.

One of the toys was a little doctor’s set.

Shen Yu made Cheng Xiaofei play the role of the patient, lying on the children’s bed. He opened the toy medical kit, put on the toy stethoscope, and pretended to check Cheng Xiaofei’s chest.

Then, he took out the toy syringe and gave Cheng Xiaofei a shot in the backside.

Cheng Xiaofei obediently played along, even pretending to cry dramatically when he got the shot.

Little Doctor Shen Yu quickly comforted him, patting his back while hugging him. He even kissed Cheng Xiaofei on the cheek, mimicking how his mom had kissed him when he had gotten a shot.

The soothing effect was very good.

After their play session, the two little ones were a bit tired and snuggled up on the couch in front of the TV, watching cartoons.

At this moment, Big-Eared Tu Tu was playing on TV, and Shen Yu absolutely loved watching it.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t mastered Tu Tu’s “ear magic,” nor did he have a talking cat of his own.

His mom was allergic to animal fur, so even though Shen Yu really wanted a pet, he obediently didn’t throw a tantrum.

When he got sick, it made him feel awful, and he didn’t want to make his mom feel bad either. But that didn’t stop him from admiring the cats and dogs he saw when he was outside.

While watching cartoons, Shen Yu grabbed some snacks from the little table in front of him and shared them with Cheng Xiaofei.

“My brother really loves these pine nuts,” Shen Yu said, offering them. “Try some, but they’re a bit hard to peel. My brother always peels them for me.”

Cheng Xiaofei had already heard that Shen Yu had an older brother. Hearing this made him feel a bit competitive, so he quickly took the pine nuts from Shen Yu’s hand and said, “Brother Fei will peel them for you.”

Shen Yu blinked his eyes and smiled, agreeing, "Okay."

After Ning Que finished his enrichment class and was picked up by Ning Boren, he instinctively walked over to the little table, hoping to peel a few pine nuts to soothe his mood, which had been affected by the boredom of the class.

However, after searching through the table, he couldn’t find a single pine nut.

Where did the pine nuts go?

There were only a few left, and he had saved them to eat tonight.

After searching for a while without finding anything, Ning Que instinctively turned his attention to the trash can beside the sofa.

Inside, there were only the discarded shells of the pine nuts.

He felt like the sky was falling.
