At the end of winter and the beginning of spring, the tribe's square was bustling with activity.
For the orcs, sacrifices and blessings were crucial rituals.
Thus, the priest's altar, built at the beginning of last year, had been continuously repaired and reinforced throughout the year, becoming increasingly grand and imposing. The high platform stood at the center of the square, with stone walls carved with totems of mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas, as well as orcs praying to the sky, embodying the natural forms of the orc god.
This year, Jiao, responsible for making robes, had significantly improved the priest's attire. She incorporated elements like pearls, shells, gauze, and feathers, and used plant juices and underwater flora to add richer dyes to the fabric. The robe, dedicated to priestly blessings, had become even more exquisite and splendid.
The warm, rainy climate of the south provided an increasing variety of plants for dyeing. After being enlightened by Yu Bai, Jiao had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the disciples of the Shell tribe. Now, her skills in weaving and garment-making had rapidly advanced.
In preparation for the grand ceremony of this year's Spring Festival, Jiao had the priestly robes ready and approached the chief, hoping to make the chief’s attire even more splendid. However, her request was declined.
Yu Bai spoke in accordance with Huo Duo'er's wishes, believing that a solemn and dignified style suited his temperament better.
Jiao felt it was a pity but managed to make a final effort. She added a black fluffy collar to the chief’s exclusive robe and adorned the left arm's gauntlet with crystal scales and a beastly mane, exuding an aura of authority and dominance.
When Huo Duo'er wore it, not only Jiao but even Yu Bai, who spent day and night with him, was instantly awestruck.
With the embellishment of the attire, power and authority were vividly embodied in Huo Duo'er.
Jiao murmured, "The incarnation of the mountain god must be like Chief Huo."
She then urged, "Bai, you should change into your robe quickly."
Yu Bai was to preside over the blessing ceremony. With some effort and Huo Duo'er's help, he donned the improved priestly robe.
The attire was resplendent, intricate, and exquisite. The inner lining was a gossamer robe adorned with pearls, rustling softly as he moved, with a faint azure glow flowing beneath. The soft and thick shoulder cape, with its holy and delicate feathers, made him appear even more radiant, with red lips and a fair complexion, his eyes and brows shining.
Not just Huo Duo'er, but any orc who saw Yu Bai in such attire would be struck with awe.
Both the priest and chief’s robes came with headpieces. The two helped each other adjust their attire and were then escorted by several leaders and a dozen squad leaders to the altar.
All the orcs of Fantasyland gathered around the square. Jiu and Mao Mao led the warriors in maintaining order, and with spontaneous calls, over fifteen hundred orcs assembled without a hint of chaos.
Man and Ze cleared the way as Huo Duo'er led Yu Bai up to the altar.
The solemn and dignified chief and the holy and noble priest deeply captivated the gazes of all the orcs. Watching their figures on the high platform was like witnessing the descent of the orc god.
The mountain lynx clan was deeply moved, holding back tears, while the gray mouse clan's faces were already wet with tears.
This was their chief and priest.
The Yuan clan was filled with pride, seeing their Bai and Big Huo!
Whether in the north or the south, across the entire wilderness continent, no tribe was more favored by the orc god than the Fantasy tribe.
Though Fantasy tribe’s current scale might not yet match the Yuan clan of the past, with the leadership of the priest and chief, its development was far faster than during the Yuan tribe's era. In the future, the tribe would surely grow stronger and more stable!
As for the other merged orc tribes, they now looked up high at the altar.
Their former tribes were too small to support a chief and priest, some were even reduced to just one or two members.
Now they had a priest and chief, so sacred and dignified that the orcs could hardly contain their excitement and sorrow. They knelt down, prostrating towards the altar to show their submission and joy.
Huo Duo'er lit the flames around the altar and then stood silently behind Yu Bai, as if he transformed into the priest's guardian deity.
Early spring had arrived, and a ray of spring light fell upon Yu Bai.
He raised the bone staff high, chanting the sacrificial words, then lit the bone incense, letting the ashes fall into clear water, which he sprinkled over the orcs.
The sunlight illuminated his brows. Compared to the shyness of his youth, Yu Bai now had the responsibility and capability to handle affairs independently.
In the past, the old priest and the leader of the Yuan tribe had urged him several times to take up the position of priest, but he always felt he wasn't up to the task and declined repeatedly.
But now, Huo Duo'er had established a brand new home with him.
Here, they had forged bonds with more tribesmen, friends, and comrades.
Yu Bai's eyes welled up with tears. For the future, for Huo Duo'er, and for the tribe, he cast aside his former aimless mindset, becoming more resolute and brave, finding a purpose to live and nurturing greater motivation.
As the Spring Festival ceremony concluded, the surrounding orcs, overcome with emotion, shed tears of joy, their sobs rising and falling in waves.
Huo Duo'er took Yu Bai's hand and led him down the steps, the path they walked illuminated by a trail of light.
—
The end of the ceremony signaled the approach of the New Year.
The New Year, replacing the traditional festivals common among the orc tribes, gradually became a concept for the orcs of the Fantasy tribe, who began to busy themselves with preparations for the holiday.
Yu Bai was also busy. He and Huo Duo'er returned to their courtyard, changed out of their heavy and intricate robes, and after lunch, without even warming their seats, began tidying up the yard, cleaning it inside and out.
Huo Duo'er, meanwhile, retrieved stored grains from the cellar and disappeared into the kitchen, where he remained occupied for a long time.
Little Wolf and Jinjin weren't much help, especially Little Wolf. Although he was a fully grown yak-wolf, strong and robust, his temperament was still rather immature, and he loved to play.
He noticed the small two-legged creature hanging strings of dried fruit and bitter fruit from the eaves. Standing on his hind legs, he chewed and secretly nibbled on a few pieces of dried fruit.
Jinjin perched on the railing, his gaze aloof and disdainful.
The leopard cat's fur wasn't thick, and Yu Bai, fearing it might catch a cold, had sewn a small vest from animal hide for it to wear.
Little Wolf finished chewing the dried fruit in his mouth, his eyes pleading.
Yu Bai chuckled and fed him a few more pieces, saying, "You can't have too many, or you might get indigestion."
Little Wolf howled, turned his head, and stole a whole bunch!
Yu Bai looked at the now-empty rope he had just hung up and chased after Little Wolf.
"Don't eat too much—!"
He was too kind-hearted to control the yak-wolf and couldn't catch up either.
Meanwhile, his mate stood silently behind the kitchen door, watching intently, a faint smile flickering in his eyes.
Yu Bai wasn't very active, and when he did go out, Huo Duo'er often carried or supported him, so his physical fitness couldn't compare to most orcs.
By the time Yu Bai's face turned red from running, Huo Duo'er finally stepped out, retrieving the stolen dried fruit from Little Wolf's mouth.
Yu Bai leaned on Huo Duo'er's arm, catching his breath, and lightly tapped Little Wolf's head a few times.
He looked annoyed. "Huo Duo'er, he's becoming less and less afraid of me..."
Huo Duo'er replied, "Bai is too kind."
With that, he sent Little Wolf off to the farm, tasking him with helping A’Xin herd the free-range cattle and sheep back into the barn.
A’Xin had raised a batch of cattle and sheep captured at the end of the year. They were untamed and fiercely wild, often breaking through the fences. Even though Little Wolf had pure yak-wolf blood, dealing with those unruly cattle and sheep without killing them required considerable effort.
Although Huo Duo'er wanted Yu Bai to get some exercise, Little Wolf had "bullied" his Bai, and on this point, he never wanted Bai to suffer, so he was always quick to stand up for him.
Yu Bai murmured, "A while ago, A’Xin mentioned that those long-legged cattle are hard to tame."
Huo Duo'er carried Yu Bai back into the house, took the dried fruit, and helped him hang it back on the eaves.
"Don't worry."
Yu Bai gazed at the neatly strung dried fruits and chili peppers, humming softly, not objecting to Huo Duo'er's "discipline" of the little wolf.
After the busy holiday season, Yu Bai stayed in the small courtyard for over half a month, barely moving except to step out of the house.
Recently, the spring rains had been continuous, and everything was flourishing. Yu Bai seemed to have adapted to the wilderness environment, and felt a bit restless.
Apart from the weekly major classes, he spent his days in the courtyard, often catching up on sleep during the day.
As for the nights, he was held by Huo Duo'er.
On the bed, the chair, the orc blanket, under the windowsill, were used over and over again and they were drenched time and time again.
—
When the rain stopped, the orcs gradually became busy again, continuing to build the tribe, plant, hunt, and weave.
Huo Duo'er went out as usual, but Yu Bai was still indulging in sleep.
On this day, he woke up to clear skies after the rain, sunlight streaming through the window onto the floor, with a few new leaves that had drifted in from outside scattered on the blanket.
Yu Bai rubbed his waist, touched the soft flesh, and shook his head slightly.
The room was quiet, the carpet that had been soiled last night had been replaced by Huo Duo'er with a new one, and the dirty one... had been washed and hung on the wooden pole in the courtyard.
Yu Bai's gaze swept over the blanket on the wooden pole, stretched lazily, and decided that he could no longer live such a "decadent" life.
In the vegetable patch in the courtyard, green sprouts were emerging. He dressed, tidied his somewhat long hair, picked up the wooden hoe, and slowly began to plant vegetables in the patch.
By nearly noon, Yu Bai looked at the almost-tended vegetable patch and rubbed his sore waist again.
Seeing the warm sunlight and the bright spring breeze, he dragged out the recliner made by Huo Duo'er and placed it under a "pavilion" extending from the eaves.
Around the pavilion were several pots of onions he had planted, where the sunlight was gentle and not too intense.
Yu Bai laid a fluffy orc blanket on the chair, lay down on it, half-curled, bathed in the warm sun, and soon fell asleep.
When Huo Duo'er returned, he immediately saw his orc mate sleeping under the pavilion.
He washed his hands and quietly approached the other.
The young man was thin, his red lips slightly parted, his cheeks somewhat plump, and his hair tips fluffy.
Perhaps it was too warm, his bare feet peeked out from the orc blanket, his toes white with a hint of pink. His slightly curly black hair, almost reaching his shoulders, clung to his slightly flushed cheeks, beautiful and serene.
Huo Duo'er grasped the slender ankle, and just as he made a move, the person woke up.
Yu Bai opened his dense lashes, his pupils pitch black, emitting a pure and transparent light.
Their eyes met, and he immediately smiled, his eyes curved like the bright moon in the sky.
Huo Duo'er was silent, his heart trembling.
He looked into Yu Bai's eyes and felt as if he had returned to the moment when he first "saw" him.
It was also on a warm sunny day, when Yu Bai was still quite young and tender. The thin boy was wrapped in a blanket, sleeping, and when he opened his eyes, his brows and eyes were curved, smiling like two crescent moons.
Whether in the past or at this moment, it was just like their first meeting.
That once frail and pitiful person had become his mate companion.
Yu Bai raised his hand and touched Huo Duo'er's face.
"What's wrong?"
Huo Duo'er came back to his senses, leaned over, and hugged Yu Bai along with the blanket, lifting him up, gazing at him from below, his steady eyes surging with a bit of heat
"Bai," recalling the words of expressing emotions in that world, he silently recited in his heart, and somewhat awkwardly blurted out, "I... I love you..."
Huo Duo'er rarely spoke such "sweet words," as he preferred to show it in his actions over words.
Yu Bai let out an "ah," murmuring, "Why are you suddenly saying these things..."
But he was truly happy after hearing it, his arms encircling the other's neck: "Me too."
His ears were warm, and he suppressed his shyness, giving a straightforward response.
"Huo Duo'er, I love you too."
