Working Records in a Weird World - 62

| WRIAWW | It Seems We Have A Lot of Fate | 62

Zong Le returned to Ankang Community in a bad mood.

Although he usually appeared expressionless, he was actually a person with rich emotions. He wasn't very good at hiding his feelings, nor did he see the need to.

Sensing his low mood, the neighbors didn't dare to provoke him. Only after he returned to his building did they exchange glances.

"Why does the boss look so upset... Who dared to provoke him?"

"No idea. Who would dare to provoke the boss? That would be asking for trouble."

"The boss went out today to send that child to school. Do you think it's possible that the kid didn't want to go to school and wanted to stay with the boss instead, and accidentally made him angry?"

"That's possible. I've always disliked that family of three. They should hurry up and hand over their power, how else are we supposed to rise up?"

Such discussions naturally didn't sit well with the Butcher.

Liu Rouya had been left by Zong Le at Taikang Yongle Hospital, where she was reportedly serving as the temporary head of the nursing department. Anyone who didn't listen to her would be hung on the wall by her hair.

The weird child had been sent to a boarding school and was rarely in the community and was naturally not able to participate in its daily affairs. After seeing all this, the Butcher, being the only weird left, naturally felt a sense of crisis.

"These group of bastards who are always scheming for power..."

The Butcher paced back and forth in his small room, wielding a blood-stained cleaver. His eyes were wide with anger, bloodshot, and the veins on his rough hands bulged.

But the Butcher, due to his physical defects, had never attended school and could barely read. At this critical moment, he couldn't think of a solution and could only call Liu Rouya.

"Hehehe."

As soon as the call connected, Liu Rouya's crunching sound came through. It sounded like she was eating something, biting through skin and bone, making a crisp sound similar to eating chips.

If one ignored the wailing in the background.

The Butcher got straight to the point: "Those greedy bastards in the community want to take our territory. That useless Xiao Fu has gone to school. What should we do now?!"

"Hehehe!"

Liu Rouya immediately became furious, letting out a terrifying, hoarse roar from deep in her throat.

The sound of a neck being snapped came from the other end of the phone, clearly indicating her rage.

"Think of something, you useless thing! What's the use of just shouting, huh?"

The boarding school the weird child attended was like another prison in the eyes of these weirds. They didn't even have a basic phone watch for elementary school students. The two of them together were like a brain without external support.

Fortunately, Liu Rouya had a higher education than the Butcher, having at least received higher education. After calming down, she thought of a solution.

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

The Butcher's hand holding the phone made a cracking sound: "Alright, I got it. So, it's about controlling our instincts and making ourselves more visible in front of the boss, right?"

Knock, knock, knock.

Zong Le was watching TV at home when he heard the sound of knocking at the door.

He went to open it and found the Butcher standing there.

The guy was too big, so he lived in a more spacious ground-floor apartment in the community. Now, he was awkwardly shrinking his head. Seeing the door open, he immediately said in a muffled voice, "Hello, boss. I brought you some watermelon."

As he spoke, the Butcher brought over a plate of sliced watermelon.

Zong Le was slightly surprised but still accepted it: "Come in and talk. What's the matter?"

"N-nothing much." For the residents of Ankang Community, stepping into this house required immense courage.

The boss's aura was perfectly restrained, unlike their own weird presence that filled the room. From their perspective, the entire house was spotless, just like an ordinary person's living space.

"It's just that when you came back today, some neighbors felt you were in a bad mood. Rouya asked me to check on you."

"Ah?" Zong Le was surprised. "Was it that obvious?"

The Butcher: "..."

The low pressure was almost forming a weird domain. How could it not be obvious?

"Actually, it's nothing serious. I'm just a bit troubled."

Zong Le placed the watermelon on the table and casually picked up a slice: "You see, there's someone who has no grudge against me, yet he's so determined to take my life. Why is that?"

He wasn't a fool. After successfully uncovering the mastermind, Joshua, Zong Le connected the recent assassination attempt by Tao Buxin to this person.

After all, Tao Buxin was a notable S-level in the Temple Army, and both assassination attempts shared striking similarities. There was no conversation, just lethal moves aimed directly at his vitals.

The Butcher was dumbfounded.

He was a burly man who had never considered that killing someone might require a reason. Not understanding what the boss meant, he cautiously replied, "Maybe he just wants your life...?"

This was Zong Le's blind spot.

The Butcher paused, seeing that his boss's expression was unpredictable, and quickly added, "Boss, who dares to be so bold? Let us handle it for you and ease your worries!"

Zong Le: ?

Why does he think his wording feel off? But then he suddendly thought of the Butcher's education level, so he didn't pursue the topic further, allowing the Butcher to escape unscathed.

The two sat on the sofa, one engrossed in eating watermelon, the other fidgeting uneasily.

The TV was broadcasting the latest news: "Half a year ago, a horrific massacre occurred at Blue Ocean Apartment in the southern district of Guiyi City. Subsequent tenants who moved in mysteriously died, and another death was reported recently. The apartment room has now been sealed off. It's reported that the property is a high-end rental and quite expensive, usually catering to financial elites in Guiyi City's CBD. It's unclear how the landlord will handle the situation."

"it was reported that three hours ago, the Holy Church in Guiyi City was attacked by an unknown assailant. According to the priest, snow suddenly fell in the church's corridors in July, freezing everything. The storage room was left in disarray, with most of the sacred relics stolen, resulting in an estimated economic loss exceeding ten million."

Amidst this background noise, Zong Le finished his watermelon.

"Why aren't you eating?"

It was originally brought as a gesture of goodwill, so how could the Butcher dare to eat?

"You can eat it, Boss. I have more at home."

In this scorching summer, nothing comforts the soul like a good neighbor.

Zong Le was quite pleased, so he didn't waste the gesture and finished the entire plate of watermelon.

After seeing the Butcher off, Zong Le nestled back into his beanbag chair.

He had bought it with the money earned from completing a mission. It was shaped like a sandbag, it was incredibly comfortable to sink into, perfect for when he didn't feel like moving.

Thinking this way, he pulled a copper cross from his pocket.

The cross was exquisitely crafted, with ancient and mysterious runes engraved along its edges. A ruby was embedded in the center, making it clear that this was no ordinary item.

Indeed, it wasn’t, as it had been taken from that silver-haired bad guy.

"Whatever, the next time I run into him, I’ll catch him and ask him clearly."

Although Joshua wanted to kill him, Zong Le was not the type to seek revenge or retaliate in kind. Even when dealing with weirds, he had to be absolutely certain that the other party was truly evil and unrepentant before he could pass a death sentence.

Even accomplices in crimes, like the butler, could only get life sentences of labor to reform themselves back into the community.

"If I’m going to convict someone, I need to understand his reasons first."

Having made up his mind, Zong Le tossed the cross aside and put his worries behind him.

He was always simple-minded and optimistic, never letting himself be troubled by baseless suspicions.

That said, Zong Le didn’t expect this day to come so quickly.

After resting at home for a couple of days, he accepted a mission.

After unlocking the southern district of Guiyi City, perhaps because the last S-level mission had gone so smoothly. Everyone in the Infinite Space had sparked a wave of enthusiasm for missions, striving to return home.

In just a few days, the completion rate of tasks in the entire region had advanced significantly. Seeing this, Zong Le decided to join in and immediately accepted an A-level mission based on his own strength.

【Blue Ocean Haunted Apartment Test Sleepers】

【Mission Level: A】

【Description: The landlord of Blue Ocean Apartments has recently been troubled. Their luxurious penthouse was the site of a gruesome massacre half a year ago, and since then, strange things keep happening... Several tenants have died tragically on the day they moved in. Major news outlets in Guiyi City have reported on the incident, which has severely affected the penthouse’s income. In an effort to quell public opinion, the landlord has decided to invite a group of sleep testers to stay overnight in the haunted apartment.】

【Main Mission: Survive peacefully until dawn in the haunted apartment of Blue Ocean Apartment.】

【Side Mission: Deduce the cause of deaths of the previous three tenants.】

"Is it just me, or did I see something about this mission on TV a couple of days ago?"

After breakfast, Zong Le drove the ambulance to Blue Ocean Apartment in advance to scout the location.

It was located in the prime area of Guiyi City’s CBD, right at the intersection of the western and southern districts, the building stood out among the headquarters of banks and office towers.

Its futuristic, streamlined design rose over a hundred stories into the clouds, like a giant crystal pillar, its surface covered in mirrored glass that reflected a cold, metallic sheen under the streetlights.

Even an ordinary person like Zong Le had heard about the high land prices in this CBD area.

Renting an apartment here reportedly cost at least five figures a month, and even the menus at the casual Western restaurants downstairs didn’t have dishes priced below three figures.

In contrast, in the impoverished outskirts of Guiyi City’s eastern district, buying a few yuan’s worth of beans required careful consideration, highlighting the stark wealth gap.

When the news reported on it two days ago, the apartment entrance was still cordoned off with yellow caution tape, but today it was gone, likely removed by the landlord to avoid further impact on business.

Zong Le waited here for a while. Upon seeing the familiar white light beams, he immediately took a few steps forward, ran into those lights. Then pretended to have just been teleported, slowly opening his eyes.

"That white light from the teleportation always makes my eyes uncomfortable."

"You probably didn't close your eyes in time... Oh, we're here!"

The survivors landed steadily and looked up to see the bustling surroundings: "Wow, not bad, we've been sent to the financial center."

"It's quite interesting, actually. The ultimate dungeon, Guiyi City, is indeed a fully functional city with everything you'd expect. Many dungeons in the Infinite Space are set in ancient times or foreign, so it's rare to encounter one that feels so familiar."

"Yeah."

This time, the survivors who teamed up clearly knew each other. After the light beams dissipated, they stood there chatting enthusiastically.

Zong Le hesitated whether to go over and greet them, but his peripheral vision caught a familiar figure.

Joshua had somehow appeared three steps beside him, his silver hair glowing softly in the residual light of the teleportation. He calmly raised his hand in greeting, his smile so gentle it was as if the life-and-death struggle had never happened.

"What a coincidence."

The man's voice carried just the right amount of surprise, and even the curve of his smile seemed meticulously calculated.

"We meet again. It seems... we have a lot of fate."
