Tang Xu made clothes for the three little ones.
As the weather gradually got hotter, the family still wore their usual outfits, but even light shirts and jackets seemed too warm to bear.
Since there weren’t any outsiders around at home, sleeveless tops would do just fine. At most, he’d make a few round-necked short-sleeved shirts, which would be much cooler to wear.
Worried that the elders in the family might not get used to the change, he first made three sets for the three little ones. Once they put them on, they immediately loved them.
“Cool! Not hot!” Er Bao ran and jumped around in his cropped pants, his grimy little hands touching his short-sleeved T-shirt again and again.
Fortunately, Tang Xu had specifically used dark-colored fabric; otherwise, the shirt would have been so stained it couldn’t be cleaned after just a couple of wears.
The chubby boy liked it too, mainly because the shirt was easy to put on. All he had to do was stick his head and arms through the openings, without the hassle of buttoning or tying anything.
Even Xiao Bao was thrilled, his little cheeks flushed with excitement. For the third time now, he was putting on and taking off the shirt himself. “Daddy! I can do it myself!”
He had always struggled with fastening the buttons on his traditional clothes, as his little fingers couldn’t quite manage to grip them. This pullover shirt was perfect for him, freeing him from needing daily help from others.
Tang Xu, seeing how much the three of them liked their new shirts, couldn’t help but beam with joy.
Ah, the hours he had spent cutting and sewing had definitely been worth it!
Wei Dong sat at the edge of the kang and glanced at the pile of silk fabric scattered across it. The material had already been cut into uneven pieces, with scraps here and there.
He sighed softly and said, "What are we going to do with all these leftover scraps?"
"Hmm?" Tang Xu turned his head to look, then grinned cheekily. "My Cousin said to give them to her. She can piece them together to make a few belly wraps or maybe some briefs or undershirts. Either way, we can’t just waste them."
Wei Dong raised a hand and gently pinched the back of Tang Xu's neck and he suggested, "Just make clothes for the kids. Adults don’t feel the heat as much. You don’t need to wear yourself out."
Tang Xu didn’t pick up on the deeper meaning behind his words. Waving a hand dismissively, he replied, "What’s tiring about it? I just need to cut and sew it together. It’s much simpler than making shirts or jackets. Look, I even drew the patterns on paper over there. I can't go wrong by cutting it."
He tilted his head to look at his partner and added, "I’ll make one for you too. It’ll keep you cool. How about the same color as Er Bao’s?"
Wei Dong: "…" He wanted to refuse but didn’t dare to speak up.
Before he could nod in agreement, Tang Xu looked up at him. The moment their eyes met, Tang Xu caught the guilty expression in his partner’s gaze.
Guilty? Guilty about what?
Tang Xu was momentarily dazed, thinking he might have seen wrong.
Then he snapped back to reality, anger rising. “Are you saying I’m wasting fabric?”
Wei Dong smiled wryly and quickly caught Tang Xu’s incoming fist, gently pulling him into his arms and holding him close. “No, no, that’s not it. I bought it for you to use however you like. I was just giving you a suggestion.”
Tang Xu lowered his eyelids and huffed, “I wasn’t cutting well at first, so I made a few crooked pieces. But I got better at it later.”
Wei Dong sighed softly. He had initially wanted to say that he wasn’t concerned about wastage at all, but when his eyes met Tang Xu’s, he swallowed the words.
Instead, he nodded and said, “You’re doing great. But don’t strain your eyes trying to work with those scraps if they’re too hard to patch together.”
“It’s fine! I’ll help my cousin with the bigger pieces, and we can toss the really tiny ones.” Tang Xu happily spread out a piece of dark blue fabric, gave it a shake, and held it up against Wei Dong’s chest under his collar.
After frowning slightly, he set it aside and grabbed a piece of teal fabric to try next. Then he set that one down too.
He didn’t even bother testing the light-colored fabrics against Wei Dong.
At first, Wei Dong didn’t realize what Tang Xu was doing. But when he saw him holding up fabric after fabric, frowning and pursing his lips as he went, he finally figured it out: Tang Xu was picking a color for him.
Wei Dong’s eyelids twitched as Tang Xu spread out a piece of white fabric. Just as Tang Xu was about to hold it up against him, Wei Dong reached out and pressed down on his hand to stop him.
Tang Xu froze, confused, and looked up at him. “What’s wrong?”
"What are you doing?" Wei Dong asked.
Tang Xu clicked his tongue, a hint of confusion in his eyes as he replied, "The clothes you’ve worn before were in similar colors, but somehow this fabric makes your face look so much darker."
Wei Dong’s expression darkened instantly, his eyelids drooping.
The three little ones, who had been roughhousing on the kang—pouncing and kicking each other—caught sight of their father’s face and immediately behaved themselves, slipping off the kang without a sound.
"Dad, we’ll go show Great-Grandpa and the others our new clothes!" The chubby one grabbed his two younger brothers, dragging them toward the door in a rush.
Er Bao and Xiao Bao stumbled after him as he pulled them along, Er Bao nearly tripping in the process.
"Slow down!" Tang Xu shot them a stern glance.
The chubby one quickly nodded, slowing his pace. But as they were about to leave the room, he muttered quietly to Er Bao, "How come you’re so clumsy? You usually run and jump without tripping at all!"
By now, Er Bao was taller than his older brother, but instead of arguing, he just giggled foolishly. Balancing on one foot, he pointed out, "Your shoes are on the wrong foot!"
In his haste earlier, the chubby one had jammed his feet into his shoes without checking, ending up with the left and right shoes swapped.
The chubby one looked down and realized it was true. He let go of his brother's hand and quickly fixed his shoes.
Then, he shot a glance at Xiao Bao’s little feet to double-check. Fortunately, Xiao Bao’s shoes were on correctly.
The chubby boy let out a sigh of relief and glanced around the room. Not hearing his father's call, he quickly grabbed his two younger brothers and headed towards Tang Mei’s room.
By this time, both the little brother and the older one should be awake.
Meanwhile, Tang Xu wasn’t aware that he had just struck a nerve with Wei Dong.
As he rambled on, "I was thinking of making them another set of clothes to change into, just to try out some colors. Er Bao, with his darker skin, needs something that will make him look fairer. Xiao Bao, on the other hand, has such fair skin that anything looks good on him. As for Da Bao, well, his face is fair, but his belly is dark—he definitely takes after you!"
Wei Dong’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he listened. As Tang Xu reached for the fabric he had moved earlier, Wei Dong suddenly lifted him by the waist and pulled him close.
Tang Xu froze for a moment, then turned his head and asked, "What are you doing?"
Wei Dong didn’t answer with words but instead answered through action. As he pinned Tang Xu down on the kang and began removing his clothes, Tang Xu didn’t feel particularly shy—after all, they were married, and they’d done this many times before.
There was no reason to feel embarrassed about doing such things in broad daylight.
But—
Who told him that this man would go ahead and touch him, then ask, Is it white or not?
Doesn’t he know if it’s white or not?! Of course, the parts not exposed to the light are white!
Not only white, he is pink! ! ! !
Tang Xu's face turned red, and he felt embarrassed and angry.
But he did it after all, and it actually made him feel a different kind of happiness.
"Get out, get out, get away from me!" Afterwards, Tang Xu got angry on the kang with his clothes wrapped around him, and kicked Wei Dong behind.
Wei Dong grabbed his fair ankle and his big hands began to get restless again.
Tang Xu took a deep breath and looked at him in horror, "Again?"
"No, I'll give you a massage, and we'll continue tonight." Wei Dong said considerately.
Tang Xu: "..." Why not just give it to him all at once!
