Brother, you smell good - 16

Shen Yu had been in a low mood from last night until he received the message from Cheng Mofei.

Now, he just wanted to climb into the other end of the internet cable and give Cheng Mofei a good beating.

Seeing that Shen Yu didn't reply for a long time, Cheng Mofei quickly tried to remedy the situation: [I was just joking.]

Of course, he didn’t actually wet the bed. He guessed it was probably that Shen Yu accidentally spilled something like a drink on the bed. There was a time when Xiao Xiong was playing on the bed with his phone and spilled cola.

Shen Yu still didn’t respond.

Cheng Mofei immediately made a video call.

Shen Yu, who had planned to ignore him for a while, was startled by the incoming video call notification.

He subconsciously wanted to decline, not wanting Cheng Mofei to see his current disheveled state and have him worry.

But after thinking about it, he switched the camera to the rear one and accepted the video call.

Cheng Mofei's handsome face appeared on the screen immediately, up close, with a smile in his eyes, "Where's the mess? Let me see."

Shen Yu placed the phone on his lap, and the screen showed complete darkness. Nothing could be seen.

This was their first video call since their "reunion."

"I've already washed it, I didn't wet the bed," Shen Yu's voice was muffled.

Cheng Mofei hummed a couple of times. "I was just joking. Even if you did wet the bed, it’s no big deal. Just wash it off. It’s getting colder, and I’m planning to change the blankets soon. I’ll wash it again then."

While speaking, Cheng Mofei's mom’s voice could be heard from a distance, seemingly urging him to go out.

Shen Yu replied, "Hmm, you go ahead and go."

Undeniably, after seeing Cheng Mofei, his mood had improved a little.

Cheng Mofei stood up, replied to his mom, and then looked at the phone camera. Suddenly, he asked, "Are you in a bad mood"

Shen Yu blinked.

Is it that obvious?

He thought his tone sounded quite normal. If it weren’t for his eyes being swollen from crying, he wouldn't have avoided the camera.

Shen Yu asked, "Why do you say that?"

On the screen, Cheng Mofei's gaze was sharp and focused. "Just a feeling."

Shen Yu's heart skipped a beat.

Cheng Mofei always seemed to casually tease him at the most unexpected moments.

But Shen Yu still firmly denied it. "No, maybe I stayed up late last night, so I’m not feeling that great today."

He would tell Cheng Mofei these things, but not right now.

At this moment, he just wanted Cheng Mofei to have fun and not be affected by anything or anyone, including himself.

Cheng Mofei replied, "That's good."

Cheng Mofei's mom called out again.

Shen Yu smiled lightly and urged, "Go ahead."

Cheng Mofei said, "Alright, I’ll hang up now."

Shen Yu replied, "Okay."

Once the video call ended, Shen Yu tossed the pillowcase, pillow cover, and blanket—soaked with tears—into the washing machine.

He then turned and grabbed a towel, soaked it in cold water, and pressed it against his eyes.

Last time, Cheng Mofei had gotten him ice cubes, but this time, with Cheng Mofei not around, Shen Yu could only make do with cold water.

His mother had sent a message early in the morning. He had scheduled their meeting for 6 PM, he hoped by then the swelling of eyes would have reduced.

Not long after he applied the cold compress, Shen Yu heard the notification sound for a new message.

He lifted the towel and glanced at his phone, finding that it was a message from Cheng Mofei.

Cheng Mofei: 【[photo]】

Cheng Mofei: 【Doesn’t this cloud look like a hamster?】

Shen Yu opened the photo and indeed saw that the cloud resembled the head of a hamster.

It was quite cute.

Shen Yu replied: 【It does. Where are you going to play?】

Cheng Mofei: 【To the beach. I’ll catch some hermit crabs to show you later.】

Shen Yu: 【Okay.】

Shen Yu turned off his phone and continued applying the cold compress.

Not long after, the phone pinged again with a new message.

It was from Cheng Mofei again.

Cheng Mofei: 【I looked at some hamster photos, and suddenly, I really want to keep one.】

Shen Yu couldn’t help but laugh.

Cheng Mofei had always loved these fluffy little creatures. In their past life, they had once adopted a stray dog together, but sadly, the dog was already quite old and had developed some health issues during its time on the streets.

Despite their best efforts, the dog passed away after being with them for over four years.

Later, Shen Yu’s health had worsened, and he hadn’t kept any other pets since.

Shen Yu: 【You can ask Xiao Xiong and Xinghe. I don’t mind.】

Cheng Mofei: 【Okay.】

Yanda University didn’t strictly prohibit keeping small animals in the dorms. Hamsters, which are kept in cages, or turtles and goldfish in tanks, were no problem.

At worst, they could just hide them temporarily during room inspections.

Dormitory group—

Cheng Mofei: 【I want to get a hamster. Is everyone okay with that? @Everyone】

Xiao Xiong: 【I’m fine with it.】

Sun Xinghe: 【I’m okay too, they’re quite cute.】

Shen Yu also replied with a simple "OK" as a formality.

Cheng Mofei: 【We can go to the pet market after National Day to pick one.】

Shen Yu smiled and turned off his phone, continuing with the cold compress.

In their past life, he had never heard of Cheng Mofei getting a hamster during university.

It was because of his presence that the "future" had changed.

He really liked this change.

Several minutes later, Shen Yu’s phone rang again.

Cheng Mofei: 【We’ve arrived at the beach.】

Cheng Mofei: 【[photo]】

Cheng Mofei: 【The hermit crab pinched me. It hurts.】

The photo showed an adorable hermit crab, probably the "culprit."

Shen Yu replied with concern: 【Did it break the skin? You need to be careful if you get hurt at the beach.】

Cheng Mofei: 【It’s fine, no broken skin. I let it go. I shouldn’t have disturbed it. I apologized to Mr. Crab.】

And so, while Shen Yu continued with his cold compress, he occasionally received messages from Cheng Mofei, chatting with him.

In the meantime, the laundry in the washing machine was done. Shen Yu hung everything out to dry on the balcony.

Looking in the mirror, he noticed his eyes had reduced in swelling quite a bit, though one of his eyelids had turned into a three-fold lid, which looked a little funny. He wasn’t sure when it would go back to normal.

At noon, Shen Yu went to the cafeteria alone to have lunch.

During the National Day holiday, the campus became quite empty, and with the autumn chill, there was an air of solitude.

The windows at the cafeteria were limited during the holiday, and Shen Yu quickly grabbed a simple meal before heading back to his dorm to continue with the cold compress on his eyes.

There were still nearly five hours left until 6 PM.

Shen Yu felt a bit anxious.

Fortunately, Cheng Mofei sent him a few messages now and then, sharing his travel experiences and what he saw along the way, which helped ease some of Shen Yu’s negative emotions.

It was lunch time, and with the cold compress still on his eyes, Shen Yu drifted off to sleep for a while.

When he woke up, there were less than four hours left until 6 PM.

Shen Yu got up and walked into the bathroom to wash his face and clear his mind.

Looking in the mirror, he saw that the redness and swelling in his eyes had mostly gone down.

Shen Yu decided not to continue with the cold compress. He walked over to his wardrobe and began carefully selecting his clothes.

It wasn’t really about picking out an outfit—it was just a way to pass time among the few summer clothes he had left.

After the National Day holiday, he would need to buy a few autumn outfits; otherwise, with the dropping temperatures, he’d risk catching a cold or getting sick.

Once he had chosen his clothes, Shen Yu went to the bathroom to wash his hair and take a shower.

After drying his hair and getting dressed, there were still less than three hours until 6 PM.

Shen Yu paced around the dorm for a while, then finally sat down on Cheng Mofei’s chair. He picked up a comic book from his shelf, but after reading only a few pages, he put it back—it was impossible to focus.

It was so hard to wait.

Fortunately, when he went to the balcony, he found that everything he had washed for Cheng Mofei was completely dry.

Shen Yu immediately collected the clothes and carefully made the bed for Cheng Mofei.

Only two hours left.

Shen Yu decided to clean the whole dorm, making sure everything was tidy.

Shen Yu watered the cactus Xiao Xiong was taking care of, threw away the half-finished bottle of cola that Sun Xinghe had forgotten, and gathered all the trash from the bins, taking it to the large dumpster downstairs.

Whew...

Shen Yu glanced at the time—there was only half an hour left.

Finally, he could leave.

At 6 PM, it was dinner time, and the meeting place with his mother was at a small restaurant.

Eating while talking would help avoid a lot of awkwardness.

After all... he didn’t really know how to interact with his mother.

Shen Yu grabbed his keys, locked the dorm door, and walked briskly toward the exit of the campus.

On the way, Cheng Mofei sent him a photo of the sunset at the beach, followed by a perfectly composed selfie.

Cheng Mofei was terrible at taking selfies. He smiled at the camera with his lips pursed like a robot, completely wasting that handsome face of his.

Shen Yu smiled with his eyes and long-pressed to save the photo.

When he arrived at the restaurant, there were still twenty minutes until 6 PM. During the National Day holiday, many people were out eating, and there was a long line outside. Shen Yu grabbed a number and found a relatively quiet spot to wait.

By the time his mother arrived at 6 PM, they should be able to go in and eat right away.

Shen Yu kept his head slightly lowered, nervously scrolling through his phone. Several times, he opened the chat with Cheng Mofei but didn’t find any new messages about his vacation.

The more anxious he got, the more he wanted Cheng Mofei to be there with him.

Finally, Shen Yu couldn’t hold back and sent a few messages to Cheng Mofei.

【Are you still at the beach?】

【Is it very cold by the sea at night?】

【What are you planning to eat tonight?】

...

But there was no reply from Cheng Mofei, and there wasn’t even the "typing" indicator showing.

He must be having fun...

As Shen Yu was thinking about this, Cheng Mofei’s WeChat voice call came through.

Cheng Mofei’s voice soon followed: “I’m driving. Just left the beach and heading to dinner. We’re having seafood tonight.”

Shen Yu felt a little more at ease and brought the phone closer to his ear. “Then go ahead and drive. I’ll hang up now.”

“It’s fine, I’ve already arrived,” Cheng Mofei’s voice came through, accompanied by the sound of him pulling the car keys out and the car door opening. “What about you? What are you having for dinner?”

“I’m about to eat, I went to eat some local specialties from Yancheng City.”

“I know a great place for local food. I went there last year with Xiao Xiong and Xinghe. They liked it too. Next time, the four of us should go together.”

“Sounds good, I’ll wait for you to come back.”

“Don’t stay out too late alone tonight. The area outside the campus isn’t very safe. Last year, a Yanda University student was robbed by some local thugs and got hurt.”

“Okay, I should be back after dinner.”

"Call me when you’re heading back, I’ll keep you company," Cheng Mofei said.

"Okay, do you have any plans tonight?" Shen Yu replied.

"No, after dinner, I’ll walk around the area a bit and then head back to the hotel. It’s a bit cold tonight."

"You should head back early too, stay safe."

...

Behind the crowd, a beautiful woman nervously clenched her fingers. She wanted to approach but hesitated.

Her son seemed to be on the phone with his partner.

When should she go over and say hello...?
