For several days in a row, the weather had been cold and gloomy, with snowflakes like grains of salt falling gently from the sky, melting completely not long after they touched the ground.
Huo Duo'er had to head to the main city early to build a new house. The cold wind slashed through the worn-down tribe like a blade. With his current condition, Yu Bai wasn’t suited to follow, so he simply stayed in the stone house to do some chores.
He walked Huo Duo'er to the door. Under the gray, overcast sky, everything in sight looked dark, except for a pair of beastly eyes gleaming with light.
Yu Bai looked up, and their eyes met. He couldn’t help but envy the giant’s energetic presence.
He pressed his lips into a slight smile. Huo Duo'er hadn’t even left yet, and lately, he seemed to keep staring at Yu Bai’s head, looking more spirited than ever.
Yu Bai: “?”
He touched his forehead. “What is it?”
Huo Duo'er: “I’m heading out now. I’ll be back early today.”
Yu Bai obediently raised his voice, “Okay~”
After sending Huo Duo'er off and waiting for the wind to die down a bit, Yu Bai headed to a sheltered corner of the courtyard.
Inside were several large stone jars, each filled with hemp vine bark that had been soaking for two days.
Yu Bai had peeled off the outer tough bark from the hemp vines he had harvested a few days ago and soaked them separately. Now, he retrieved the soaked fibers, scooping them out and placing them into a basket to carry back indoors.
Yu Bai sat by the fire. After warming his hands, he skillfully began extracting the fibrous strands from the tough hemp bark.
In the countryside, the elders often twisted hemp ropes by hand. Yu Bai had learned it from his grandfather before, so it wasn’t hard for him to pick it up again.
By noon, Huo Duo'er came back for a short visit.
At that moment, a pile of fibrous strands was stacked neatly by Yu Bai’s feet. Huo Duo'er had called out to him several times without getting a response, Yu Bai was completely focused.
“Bai,” Huo Duo'er crouched beside him and pulled the damp, sticky hemp bark from his hands. “Eat something first.”
Yu Bai snapped out of it. “You’re back?”
Huo Duo'er took Yu Bai’s hands in his and examined them closely, his brow faintly furrowed.
Yu Bai explained, “I want to finish peeling the bark quickly. It’s not that tiring, really.”
The process orc used to make hemp rope had fewer steps than modern methods and was rather rough.
But Yu Bai didn’t cut corners, he wanted the fibers to be more refined and resilient. That way, the resulting hemp fabric would be higher quality, and clothing made from it would be much more comfortable to wear.
Huo Duo'er looked at him and said, “I’ll help you when I get back tonight.”
Yu Bai quickly shook his head. “Just leave these chores to me. You’re already working hard building the new house in the snow and wind every day, you must be exhausted.”
As he spoke, he gently pushed that large tattooed arm, urging him, “Go eat something first.”
The stove fire was still going, and since stone pots retained heat better than clay ones, Yu Bai had stored the meat and mushroom soup he cooked in the morning inside a stone pot. Beneath the coals, a few wild yams were also roasting.
He used a stone knife to cut open one of the yams, its flesh was purple and fragrant. He pushed most of it toward the giant, keeping a smaller portion for himself in a small clay bowl.
To finish the house as soon as possible, Huo Duo'er worked from dawn until dusk every day. He only came back after noon to eat with Yu Bai, spending a short moment with him before hurrying back to the tribe’s main city.
Yu Bai saw Huo Duo'er off again, the cold wind making him squint his eyes shut. Only when the giant’s figure completely disappeared from sight did he close the door, rubbed his frozen hands together, and returned to peeling the hemp with full focus.
In the afternoon, Yu Bai finally finished peeling all the soaked tough hemp vine bark.
He lifted the heavy basket full of fibers and slowly placed them into the stone pot.
He added water to the pot and increased the heat. The hemp fibers needed to be boiled for at least half an hour, after boiling, they would become even more resilient.
Yu Bai had been busy all day and was feeling a bit drained.
He sat on a stone, holding a bowl of hot water and sipping it slowly. Then he picked up the leftover roasted wild yam from lunch and ate a few pieces, just barely regaining some strength.
The wooden door rattled suddenly, startling him.
He carefully opened the door and heard the murmur of an orc speaking outside the wall.
The small house was near the river, so orcs from the tribe often passed by to fetch water.
Around dinnertime, more and more orcs would head to the river for water.
Yu Bai shut the door again.
He returned to the stove to tend the fire. The timing was just about right. He grabbed the fire stick and began to slowly fish out the boiled fiber from the pot.
Knock knock—
Suddenly, someone knocked at the door, and Yu Bai quickly went to answer.
It wasn’t Huo Duo'er, nor was it A’Li, it was a male orc from the horned bull clan.
Yu Bai subtly glanced at him over, vaguely recognizing the face.
Back when he had gone out with an orc squad to gather supplies, there had been someone like this in the group. If he remembered right, this orc had even made a few crude remarks about him to his face.
Yu Bai’s expression tightened, and he was about to shut the door.
The horned bull male pushed against it. “Whoa, don’t, don’t close it.”

A gleam lit up in his eyes as he stared brazenly at Yu Bai’s face, like he’d spotted a delicious piece of meat. He let out a low chuckle and licked the corner of his mouth.
“So this is what you look like, huh? No wonder I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.”
Yu Bai wasn’t nearly as strong as a orc. With one forceful shove, the horned bull male pushed the door wide open.
“You—” Yu Bai’s face darkened, but just as he opened his mouth to speak, the orc suddenly shoved his shoulder, making him stagger backward.
The horned bull beast smiled maliciously: "Such a white body, the butt is also white, even though it is not fat, but it has been with the giant for so long, it must be tough."
The unbearable words made Yu Bai glare angrily. He rarely felt as angry as he did at that moment.
The orc became more and more proud: "That's what it looks like to me."
He was pitiful yet resilient, which made him feel hard all over.
Yu Bai felt a sense of despair, and no matter how hard he fought, he was simply picked up by the other party.
He hit the horned bull beast's shoulders hard and pulled its hair: "Get out of here!"
"Yes, that's it, keep going!"
The male horned bull orc was filled with excitement, and a twisted smile appeared on his dark and yellow face.
"See if you still despise me, I'm going to make you submit!"
The wooden door could not withstand the orcs' pushing and shoving, and it shook and creaked.
—
"What's that noise?"
It snowed for several days, and it was difficult to get water after the river bank froze, so A’Li and Take made several trips back and forth to fetch water and brought it back home to store.
They passed by the cabin again and found that the door was open and there were noises in the yard.
A’Li poked his head to look inside, with a smile on his face: "Bai..."
His eyes were wide open, his smile was frozen on the corners of his mouth, and he ran in without finishing his words.
Take behind him had a bad feeling and followed him in.
The male horned bull had red eyes. He pressed down the struggling sub-female beast, threw him hard, and then pressed him onto the head of the bed.
He pinched Yu Bai's waist, and could feel her slenderness through the beast robe. He laughed and shook the hem of the beast robe, his animal heart aroused.
When the male orc was about to forcefully lift Yu Bai's kicking legs, he felt a thud on his back, causing him to groan in pain.
A’Li picked up a stone jar filled with water and threw it directly at the male horned ox.
"A’Shi, you're crazy!"
A’Li shouted to Take, "Come help me hold him down!"
A’Shi was a strong adult male horned orc with great strength and considerable hunting experience.
A’Li and Take had just reached adulthood and were not as experienced in combat as A’Shi. But together, the two younger males managed to subdue him and pressed him down onto the stove.
A’Li shouted angrily, "Why are you laying hands on Bai?! Bullying a weak sub-female, what kind of male are you?!"
A’Shi howled in fury, struggling violently. Take and A’Li, afraid he might break free, didn’t dare ease their grip even a little.
In the end, the two of them drove A’Shi out.
A’Li and Take returned inside, a bit at a loss, gathering around the bed.
“Bai, are you okay? Are you hurt?”
“A’Shi went too far, bullying you like that.”
Yu Bai was still shaken, his chest tight with pain.
His whole body trembled uncontrollably. His lips moved as if to speak, but his tongue was trembling too much to form words. It took quite a while before he could calm down even a little.
A’Li squatted down, looking at him with concern, then scratched his head and said, "Should I go get that giant?"
"Don't..." Yu Bai's voice was hoarse, and he licked his lips, trying to calm his breath, sniffling a bit. "Don't tell Huo Duo'er yet."
"Why?"
Yu Bai lowered his lashes, a heavy feeling in his heart.
He steeled himself, his body still trembling. "You’ve already taught him a lesson. I won’t... I won’t let it happen again next time."
His words trailed off as his gaze landed on the long shadow outside the door.
He was stunned as he met the gaze that was directed at him, and the feigned strength and calmness he had just been holding onto vanished in an instant, replaced by a surge of grievance and lingering fear.
He didn’t know when Huo Duo'er had returned, but now, with an unreadable expression, Huo Duo'er's beastly eyes locked onto Yu Bai.
Without saying a word, Yu Bai instinctively sensed that Huo Duo'er was angry. Huo Duo'er walked straight up and lifted him up in one motion.
Huo Duo'er shook the animal hide, wrapping it tightly around Yu Bai from head to toe, wordlessly holding him in his arms as he walked out the door.
"Huo Duo'er?"
Silence spread, and the wind swept past his ears.
Yu Bai leaned against Huo Duo'er's shoulder, remaining quiet, knowing that this matter wouldn’t be settled so easily.

ReplyDeletePoor Bai!!!!! I can't help but think the city life might be similar to this instance. So many "strong" orc males running around, thinking they deserve females, etc. I hope that's not true.
