When he suddenly saw him walking into the movie theater, Su Yuchen's first reaction was shock, which then turned into deep anger.
Su Yuchen never considered himself a good person. That rare moment of kindness when he warned Zong Le to run far away had completely vanished the moment Bluebeard dragged him by the hair, forced him to kneel, and slapped him across the face. Only regret remained in his heart.
Human nature is complex, no one can be purely good or bad forever. Su Yuchen was no exception. He did envy Zong Le, and he had indeed listened to Bluebeard’s suggestion to drug him out of sheer jealousy.
Yet he couldn’t deny that Zong Le was genuinely a good person, as pure as a blank sheet of paper and someone who had briefly awakened the last shreds of his conscience.
But what happened next made him question his own eyes.
Bluebeard, an S-level, the 82nd strongest, had been sent flying across the entire movie theater with just one casual punch?
Watching as the impact toppled ten rows of seats and left a massive crater in the center of the wreckage, Su Yuchen’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, his jaw practically hitting the floor.
Even though he knew Zong Le carried the title of "Talented Newcomer," who could’ve imagined a mere C-level newcomer could send an S-level flying with a single strike?
If not for the sharp wooden splinters embedded in his hand, Su Yuchen would’ve dismissed it all as some absurd hallucination.
In truth, there were people far more stunned than Su Yuchen.
"You..."
When Zong Le arrived, Bluebeard hadn’t even spared him a glance. A C-level? He could crush him with a flick of his finger.
That arrogance lasted only a second before it was shattered along with everything else by that single punch.
Bluebeard lay in the crater, struggling to move his eyes toward his caved-in chest, where his ribs had already twisted out of shape. Thick, bloody foam bubbled at the corners of his lips, and every breath felt like swallowing shards of glass.
But compared to the pain, what consumed him was sheer disbelief.
Bluebeard himself was an S-level specialized in strength. He spent most of his time in the Infinite Space’s training rooms, his muscles honed to perfection, capable of outlifting world champions in one-handed feats.
That was why he understood all too well the terrifying force behind Zong Le’s seemingly effortless strike.
But how? He was just a C-level!
Seeing white light flicker around Bluebeard’s body, Su Yuchen jolted in alarm and shouted, "Watch out, he’s activated Indomitable body!"
"Not bad... not bad at all. As expected of the talented newcomer."
Using Indomitable body to temporarily suppress his injuries and pain, Bluebeard slowly rose from the ground. He tore off his bloodied shirt, revealing a savage grin. "It’s been years since I’ve taken damage like this. If it weren't for this damn domain draining my energy, you’d never have landed a hit so easily."
"That attack just now, you can only pull it off once, right?" He scoffed. "I’ve seen plenty of newcomers like you, who stumble upon a good tool and don't know how high the sky is and how deep the earth is, and thinking they can challenge an S-level. But without exception, they all ended up miserably. But you? I’ll make sure your fate is ten thousand times worse."
Zong Le stood motionless, utterly indifferent to the threats.
The black-haired young man pondered for a moment before turning to Su Yuchen: "What's a indomitable body?"
Su Yuchen: "......"
Su Yuchen: "Aren't you a strength-type? How can you not know about this? It's an advanced skill for strength-type survivors. When activated, it provides temporary immunity to the effects of the weird domain, and also increase your own strength and be immune to negative states... In short, it's an extremely effective buff skill."
By now, he had somewhat regained his composure.
As Bluebeard had said, there was no way a C-level could injure an S-level like this. It was clear that some kind of item had been used to achieve this effect. Such an overpowered item must be a consumable with limited uses. Bluebeard had been caught off guard earlier, allowing the attack to land.
Now that the opponent had activated his Indomitable body, it signaled they were getting serious.
As one of combat specialist among survivor types, the sheer terror of an S-level strength-type was something Su Yuchen didn't dare imagine.
"Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining."
Zong Le suddenly understood, nodding in comprehension.
His casual tone completely disregarded the formidable threat posed by Bluebeard's combat power, which only served to further enrage the latter.
The black-haired youth lowered his head in thought, completely oblivious to the thunderous fist coming his way.
"Look out!" Su Yuchen's warning had barely left his lips when the young man tilted his head slightly without even looking up. The punch that could have shattered steel plates merely brushed past his hair, not even grazing his clothes.
Wait, was this reaction speed even human? Su Yuchen found himself drowning in deep self-doubt.
But the real absurdity was yet to come. Bluebeard launched a relentless barrage of attacks, each one effortlessly dodged by Zong Le using only the most basic movements, a slight lean, a backward tilt, a simple step back.
It was all executed with such casual grace and precision it seemed choreographed through countless practice. The black-haired youth moved with effortless ease, strolling leisurely as if walking an unruly dog.
"Oh! I get it now!" Zong Le's eyes suddenly lit up.
His fingers abruptly spread open.
In that instant, a glimmer of white light blossomed at his fingertips, swiftly swirling around him to outline his silhouette with a faint luminous halo.
Indomitable Body!
After consecutive shocks, Su Yuchen felt that he had lost the ability to be shocked. He stared numbly at the silver glow enveloping Zong Le, and his mood was indescribable.
Truth be told, advanced skills weren't particularly rare among survivors, many B-level survivors possessed them, and they were practically essential skills.
But knowing and mastering were two entirely different things.
"So this is Indomitable body? I don't feel any power boost..."
Zong Le waved his hand experimentally, sounding somewhat disappointed.
Finally pushed past his limit, Bluebeard's face turned from red to purple with rage. Just as he was about to use an item he'd been saving, he saw the black-haired youth cancel his newly acquired Indomitable body.
"It's not useful."
To Bluebeard's horror, the voice came from behind him!
Before he could react, bony fingers had already seized his collar. The world spun violently as his massive frame was lifted like a sack of potatoes and slammed mercilessly into the ground.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—five consecutive strikes with such force that anyone would see stars.
Zong Le, finally putting away his experimental mindset, and finally grew serious. Entering combat mode, he radiated a chilling aura, each throw precisely calibrated to inflict maximum agony on Bluebeard without knocking him unconscious.
"Hey, W-wait..."
Bluebeard, whose indomitable body had been shattered, spat out another mouthful of blood. The long-ignored man finally got what he wished for, except this time, under the relentless assault, he didn’t even get a chance to speak.
Even when he activated a defensive item, one supposedly thick enough to stop an elephant’s charge, it might as well have been transparent under Zong Le’s fists. As he effortlessly broke it, Bluebeard fell unconscious.
Seeing him go limp, Zong Le didn’t stop. He casually delivered a chop to the back of Bluebeard’s neck, ensuring the man would stay out cold for at least ten hours. Only then did he finally relent, satisfied.
On the other side, Su Yuchen, who had witnessed the entire scene, was utterly stunned.
After tossing Bluebeard under a seat, Zong Le suddenly remembered there was still someone else in the movie theater. Recalling his usual low-key persona, he hurriedly explained, "Uh, I’m not usually this violent, okay? He started it, so I just..."
Su Yuchen abruptly looked up, but instead of suspicion or distrust, his eyes shimmered with tears.
He grabbed Zong Le’s hand. "You were amazing!!!"
Though Su Yuchen had chosen to offer himself in exchange for protection, Bluebeard’s cruelty had been unbearable. The man had humiliated him at every turn, lashing out violently at the slightest provocation.
In contrast, this sudden savior not only had a kind heart but also possessed strength capable of overwhelming an S-level threat!
Su Yuchen’s heart pounded wildly, warmth and safety flooding his chest.
His eyes were hot, and just when he was about to speak. The door of the movie theater suddenly creaked opened, interrupting him.
A silver-haired man stood silently at the entrance, his gaze drifting indifferently over Bluebeard’s motionless form, his life or death unknown, and then smiled at the two people holding hands, his voice was so gentle that it could drip water.
"I’ve been searching everywhere for you. So this is where you’ve been."
Zong Le couldn’t explain why, but there was something strange in his tone of voice.
"Uh...I got held up by something."
He pulled his hand free and pointed at the unconscious Bluebeard. "I just happened to run into this guy bullying people."
"Is that so?"
Joshua seemed uninterested in pressing further. Without even asking what had happened, he brushed past it. "Since it’s resolved, let’s go. There just happens to be a collective task to deal with."
"Okay."
They stepped into the main hall.
Many survivors had gathered here, Zong Le noticed the red strings on their wrists had vanished, their faces filled with admiration for Joshua.
"1st is incredible! Who knew we could temporarily lift the curse this way?"
"Yes, now we are not affected, we can go and fight with the weird at will. With the weird's energy draining ability gone, let's see what it can do!"
"Lord Joshua is truly incredible, he can actually bear the weird curse of so many people..."
Hearing these discussions, Joshua's eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
He turned and extended his hand toward Zong Le, a glimmer of light appearing at his fingertips.
"Here, transfer your curse to me temporarily. This way, you can focus on dealing with the weird with peace of mind."
Zong Le frowned deeply: "If it's transferred to you, will there be any negative effects?"
Hearing the expected question, Joshua's smile deepened.
"It's no trouble." The man elegantly brushed the black cross-shaped birthmark on his forehead. "As the 'Son of God,' I possess the ability to resurrect. Even if I take on countless curses, I won't die."
"In other words... I am immortal."
Hearing this, Zong Le silently scanned his surroundings.
The rescued survivors were fervently praising Joshua's generosity, some even moved to tears, cheering ecstatically as if ready to worship the patriarch's as a deity of the new world.
Yet not a single one showed concern for whether Joshua's body might suffer from bearing excessive curses, the vanishing red strings on their wrists were proof enough.
Even if he wouldn't die, wouldn't it still be painful?
How could these people so easily shift their burdens onto another?
Zong Le fixed Joshua with a steadily.
"No."
He shook his head and walked away.
Watching the black-haired youth depart, Joshua lowered his eyes slightly.
He studied the red strings on his wrist, now darkened to black from accumulation, and the smile in his eyes was so strong that it could hardly be concealed.
What a perfect reaction, it was following the script he'd planned so far. Zong Le's stubborn kindness, his refusal to transfer suffering, was precisely the answer Joshua had hoped for.
"Sure enough... kind people are the cutest."
He liked such people the most.
Because every move was under his control.
TL: I don't know if it's just me but I strangely don't like the survivors in this infinite space, I remember liking the survivors in infinite trainee(same author that created this novel) and we got to see a lot of their past and some of their pov. But with this novel, I am just reading the same characters repeatedly without getting to know the survivors that well.
I know that their memories are blurred due to the system but their characteristics don't make feel as invested as I felt for Infinite Trainee characters.
Well at least we get some pov's from the weird's but I still wish we can get some new characters or for survivors to get more screen time because they feel like background characters at this point.
This doesn't mean I am dropping the novel, I just wanted to share my thoughts lol

woooo, someone actually said what i felt too, and it was the translator no less LOL. yea, i feel you in disliking just about every survivor. they all feel steeped in the same flavor: (varying degrees of) nihilistic canon fodder. does it make sense? yea, for the higher ranked survivors especially. but even in zong le's beginning 'job', the low rank guy he met was an opportunistic vulture serving to introduce the audience to how self serving the survivors were. if the poison trickled down to even the noobs, then it definitely runs deep higher up (as we have repeatedly seen).
ReplyDeletethe cost of doing this though flatens the character of every survivor, especially since we also have the weirds/npcs ALSO serving the role of nihilistic canon fodder. rarely do we see characters play against this, excluding zong le.
its just easier to like the weirds/npcs more because we see them far more often, thus see more character building. and since the weirds/npcs basically fill the same niche that survivors do, while also having more screen time, it makes the readers less inclined to like the survivors. given, im also somewhat indifferent to the weirds/npcs, but since we see them more im a bit more invested in their story than the survivors.
also, im glad youre not dropping this LOL. as much as im criticizing the characterization, i do like reading zong le creating chaos
To be fair, the writing in these is generally mediocre at best. The only translated Infinite Flow that sticks in my mind as "really really good" in In Virtual Reality, the most generic name that imo kills anyone's interest in ever trying to read it.
ReplyDeleteThe other players in this one are copy-pasted, indistinguishable, and generic.
yup, there is not a single genuinely likeable person here (or should i say interesting?). And I mean they don't have to be as good a person as MC right? I feel like they are all just boring background, lol. I think my favourite "players" are from the Novel "I became A God in a Horror Game". They aren't all nice people, maybe even bad ones, but they are so interesting characters, they even drive the plot forward without the MC. They have genuinely amazing interaction and chemistry...and i preferred that ML
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. Like there isa quite a few character with potential in my eyes, for example the hospital directors, I feel like he have a lot more potential to make the story a bit more interesting but when they encounter him in his office, he just start to curse them then self-implode... I just felt: "Well, that was fcking anticlimactic." Others character except a few just make me feel like I'm looking at the same person but with different names.
