Brother, you smell good - 38

"I have something to do, so I'm heading back now. I'll practice again tomorrow," Cheng Mofei quickly packed up his things, grabbed his umbrella, and left the indoor basketball court.

It was already getting late, and many people were resting, with some having already left.

The indoor temperature was slightly higher, so it didn’t feel cold. But as soon as Cheng Mofei stepped into the rain, the sudden rush of cold wind made him shiver uncontrollably.

Under the night sky, the streetlights illuminated the raindrops, each one clearly visible as they hurried to land on his umbrella, unable to catch up with Cheng Mofei's sprinting speed.

What if Shen Yu, having just recovered from being sick, catches another cold from the wind at the school gate?

Shen Yu's condition hadn’t been right since he fell ill. Cheng Mofei was still waiting for him to fully recover so they could have a good talk.

He hoped Shen Yu wouldn’t get sick again.

Damn legs, move faster!

...

Shen Yu had originally planned to wait for the delivery of oranges and then head straight back to the dorm. But as he waited, the rain intensified.

After the delivery person handed him the oranges, Shen Yu hesitated for a moment, then opened WeChat and sent a message to Cheng Mofei.

One reason was that he didn’t want to get sick from the rain again, and the other was that, after thinking things through, he couldn’t wait to be alone with Cheng Mofei.

During this time, he had been avoiding Cheng Mofei, and it had been a long while since they had been close to each other.

Cheng Mofei replied with a familiar hamster emoji and a "OK" gesture.

Cheng Mofei: [Wait for me]

Not long after, Shen Yu saw a figure running quickly toward him.

As the distance closed, Cheng Mofei slowed down a little, coming to a steady stop in front of him, holding the umbrella over his head.

“Let’s go.” His voice was breathless from the sprint.

In the dim light, Cheng Mofei’s gaze burned as he looked at the bag of oranges Shen Yu was holding, his heart racing even faster.

Did he buy them for him?

Did he buy them for him?

Had Shen Yu already recovered, and were they going to be like they were before?

Inside Cheng Mofei’s heart, it felt as though countless little birds had flown in, fluttering around in a disordered, excited way.

"Let’s go." Shen Yu smiled at him, not handing over the oranges. After all, Cheng Mofei was holding the umbrella, and carrying all those oranges wasn’t exactly light.

The umbrella wasn’t very large, so as they walked, Cheng Mofei raised his hand and gently draped it over Shen Yu’s arm, worried that he might accidentally step out of the umbrella’s coverage and get wet.

“Did you do anything fun at Auntie’s today?” Cheng Mofei asked, trying to sound casual.

“I visited her studio. She said she’s going to give me a painting, but it’s not finished yet. She’ll give it to me when she picks me up to go to her place for hot pot sometime,” Shen Yu replied.

Cheng Mofei’s heart leapt with joy—Shen Yu had actually told him such a long sentence, even sharing with him about the painting and the hot pot invitation.

Then Shen Yu asked, “Do you want to come with me for hot pot? Mom invited you too.”

He wasn’t lying. His mom really had invited Cheng Mofei, probably because she was worried he might feel uncomfortable going alone. Having a good friend there would make it easier. Plus, Cheng Mofei had been taking good care of Shen Yu, and as a mother, inviting her son’s close friend over for dinner was the least she could do.

The only thing he wasn’t sure about was whether if that day came, Cheng Mofei would still want to go to his house for hot pot after knowing his sexual orientation.

Cheng Mofei’s heart soared, as if all the little birds inside had fainted from joy, and without hesitation, he replied, "Sure."

Shen Yu was acting just like before, and he was even going to take him to his house for hot pot!

The distance and coldness from before must have just been an illusion, they were still good brothers.

As he felt the warmth of Shen Yu’s arm around his, Cheng Mofei’s heart raced. But then, unexpectedly, Shen Yu said, “I’m sorry for how I acted earlier. I wasn’t in a good state.”

Anyone who had been treated with inexplicable coldness wouldn’t feel great about it, and especially not Cheng Mofei, who hadn’t done anything wrong. He shouldn’t have had to bear the brunt of Shen Yu’s negative emotions.

Shen Yu was a sensitive and complicated person, but he wasn’t unreasonable.

Upon hearing this, Cheng Mofei furrowed his brows and gently patted the arm around Shen Yu’s shoulders.

He frowned and said, "What’s there to apologize for? Everyone has their bad days. You didn’t give me the cold shoulder, you didn’t block me or anything. Just the other day, when it suddenly rained, you even helped me collect the clothes drying on the balcony."

Shen Yu couldn’t help but curve his lips slightly.

The fact that Cheng Mofei was mentioning something as trivial as helping with the laundry, it was just a small favor between roommates. Even if they were just regular roommates, he would have helped with it.

In fact, on that day, he hadn’t only collected Cheng Mofei’s clothes, but everyone’s clothes that had been drying on the balcony. It wasn’t like he could just leave Cheng Mofei’s clothes behind.

They hadn’t had any big argument. It was just a slight distance between them, nothing more.

Then Cheng Mofei suddenly changed the topic, "So, what happened that day when it rained?"

Shen Yu froze for a moment, the smile on his lips fading as he pursed them into a straight line. After a few seconds of silence, he slowly responded, "I don’t want to talk about it now. Can we talk about it later?"

He didn’t want to make excuses or lie, and he certainly didn’t want to brush it off.

"Of course," Cheng Mofei tightened his hold on Shen Yu and gently rubbed his head against his, a gesture of affection that he really liked. "Can we watch a movie and sleep together tonight? I’ll wait for you after class tomorrow to go to the cafeteria for lunch. And tomorrow evening, you don’t have any classes, do you want to come watch me practice basketball? Actually, never mind, don’t come."

Cheng Mofei rambled on for a while before suddenly falling silent.

Shen Yu asked, "What’s wrong?"

Cheng Mofei didn’t want to mention that someone was planning to introduce a potential partner to Shen Yu. Their relationship had only just started to return to normal, and he hadn’t had the chance to solidify it yet.

He didn’t want anyone else to interfere.

So, Cheng Mofei came up with a random excuse, "It’s cold. You should rest up, and try not to go out at night for a while."

Shen Yu simply hummed in agreement, not saying much more.

Because of being sick, Shen Yu had missed some classes recently, and he hadn’t caught up on all of his assignments. He probably had to spend the night in the dorm catching up on work.

He needed to take care of his own matters first, before being in the best state to handle things between the two of them.

Once they were back in the dorm, Shen Yu placed the bag of sugar oranges onto Cheng Mofei’s desk.

The previous batch of sugar oranges had already been eaten, and Cheng Mofei hadn’t even bought new ones in the past few days.

Cheng Mofei watched closely as Shen Yu placed the last orange into the basket. He then picked up the full basket and placed it on Shen Yu’s desk.

"Supervise me," he said.

Shen Yu glanced at him and smiled, giving a soft "mm-hmm."

Finally, Cheng Mofei's lingering worries were completely set at ease.

Thinking about how Shen Yu had been standing in the wind at the school gate earlier, Cheng Mofei eagerly ran to the bathroom, filled the footbath with hot water, and brought it over to place between their two seats, inviting Shen Yu to join him for a foot soak.

The footbath was large enough for one person or two, and naturally, Shen Yu wouldn’t refuse.

Shen Yu was a bit shorter than him, and his feet were smaller as well. He sat with his feet neatly positioned between Cheng Mofei’s, looking quiet and obedient.

Noticing Shen Yu reading a textbook from his major with a focused expression, Cheng Mofei casually grabbed his own textbook and began reading alongside him.

Just then, Xiao Xiong, in the middle of playing a game, suddenly stood up with a pained expression, "My roommate’s competitiveness is making me feel so disheartened."

Cheng Mofei shot him a glance, unimpressed. "You could stop playing the game."

Xiao Xiong grinned, "I won’t."

Shen Yu bent his eyes, a thought suddenly crossing his mind. He asked, "Brother Xiao, you’re so good at gaming and you’re funny too. Have you ever thought about becoming a streamer or an up-and-coming content creator?"

Back in 2018, self-media was starting to rise. Shen Yu didn’t have the talent for it himself, but he thought Xiao Xiong definitely could make it in that field.

Xiao Xiong scratched his head, "Honestly, I never thought about it, but now that you mention it, it sounds like something I could try... Do you think I could?"

Shen Yu nodded, "You definitely could. There’s no harm in giving it a try."

Xiao Xiong beamed, "Alright, I’ll look into it when I have some free time."

With that, he headed to the bathroom.

After Xiao Xiong left, Cheng Mofei suddenly spoke up, "What do you think I’d be good at?"

Shen Yu gave Cheng Mofei a sidelong glance, his eyes briefly flicking over the finance book in Cheng Mofei’s hands. With a smile, he teased, "You’d make a great capitalist."

Cheng Mofei: “?”

Cheng Mofei: "I’m an honest man."

Shen Yu shot him a look, as if to say you’ll figure it out on your own.

In his past life, when Shen Yu first met Cheng Mofei, the young man had already been “President Cheng.”

An honest person couldn’t sit in such a high position. If anything, he was more like a clever fox, pretending to be simple.

Just as they were talking, Xiao Xiong walked out of the bathroom.

Shen Yu, with a playful glint in his eyes, suggested, "You could start an entertainment company in the future, sign Xiao Xiong, and make him a big gaming streamer. You’d both make money together."

Xiao Xiong wiped his hands and, though a bit confused, eagerly agreed, "Yeah, yeah! I’ll just stick with Brother Cheng!"

Cheng Mofei waved him off, "Stop being flattering me. Go play your game."

His gaze then shifted back to Shen Yu, who was sitting across from him. Cheng Mofei asked, "What about you? What do you want to do in the future?"

"I want to stay at Yanda University and become a professor," Shen Yu said softly, but with a conviction that left no room for argument.

This was the first time he had shared his plans for the future with someone else.

Cheng Mofei immediately gave him a thumbs up, his expression serious, "Professor Shen."

"President Cheng," Shen Yu wasn’t going to back down, "Why don’t you donate a few buildings to the school? The chemistry lab needs renovation."

"Recently, my project went bankrupt, and I’ve been reduced to living on the streets. Professor Shen, please show mercy and take me in," Cheng Mofei joked.

When Sun Xinghe hurried back, this was the scene he walked into.

He had just had a long conversation with his girlfriend about their recent issues, and after talking all night, they had finally cleared things up.

Seeing Shen Yu and Cheng Mofei soaking their feet together, laughing and talking, Sun Xinghe let out a sigh of relief and casually asked, "So you two finally made up?"

Cheng Mofei frowned, "We didn’t have a quarrel. There’s no ‘making up’ to talk about."

Sun Xinghe didn’t believe it for a second. He was sure these two had some kind of disagreement but were just too stubborn to admit it.

Sun Xinghe, "This is exactly what happens when my girlfriend and I have an argument."

Shen Yu: “...”
