It’s Exciting to Snatch the Supporting Male Lead and Run Away [Quick Wear] - 58

IETSTSMLARA | The Charming Substitute | 58

She applied the ointment randomly, but knew where it hurt. The ointment was colorless, and once applied, the bruises became completely invisible.

Father Lin, who was standing by, was also shocked. He seemed to recognize his eldest son for the first time. Based on Lin Su's recent actions, he genuinely suspected that if his wife didn't agree, Lin Su would have strangled her to death and disguised it as a sudden illness.

As for his filial piety towards him, it was nothing but a façade.

"How did you become so ruthless?" Father Lin asked, heartbroken.

Lin Su smiled at him, "Naturally, it's because Father failed in teaching his son."

Father Lin was so furious that he nearly fainted, but he could do nothing about it. If he really went to report this, he was sure Lin Su would indeed harm his younger brother. "Fine, I'll just pretend I never had you as a son."

"Father is so understanding, that's really for the best," Lin Su said with a smile. "Within the inner quarters, we can act as strangers, but in public, I ask that Father considers my younger brother and your face for our family's reputation. If you find living here uncomfortable, I can arrange another residence for you two. If you find living in the capital unbearable, a minor offense can send you back to Qinghe County. Farewell."

With his official position, he naturally had the power to do this. His final words were like a pardon, prompting his stepmother to quickly stand up and help Father Lin leave.

Their hurried departure made it seem as if they were being chased by wolves.

As they left Lin Su's courtyard, they encountered Lin Qingtang, who was returning with some paintings. Upon seeing them, Lin Qingtang bowed in greeting, "Master, Madam."

Since he hadn't officially married yet, he could only address them this way.

The stepmother, seeing Qing Tang being so respectful, found him to be completely harmless compared to Lin Su in the courtyard. With a smile, she said, "Lin Qingtang, you're back from outside. Look at you, you are covered in sweat. Why didn't you ask a servant to help carry those? Go and rest so you don't tire yourself out."

Lin Qingtang, never having experienced such an attitude from her, felt quite flattered. "It's nothing, you and Master should also rest well."

Seeing the two of them leaving their courtyard in such a state of panic, Lin Qingtang  wondered what the young master had done to them. With these questions in mind, he politely bid them farewell and entered the courtyard, where everything seemed normal.

Lin Su was at the desk, looking at something.

Lin Qingtang placed the paintings on the table and said, "Young Master, I brought the paintings you asked for."

"Given the time, you must have run into my father and stepmother on your way back?" Lin Su asked, looking up.

Lin Qingtang hesitated for a moment, about to ask his question. "What did you say to them? The madam's attitude changed so suddenly."

"I just said some things to clear her mind. Don't worry about it." Lin Su reached out and pulled Lin Qingtang into his lap. "You just came back, but you are worrying about them first, why don't you care about me, your young master?"

Caught off guard, Lin Qingtang placed his hands on Lin Su's shoulders and said, "Because in my experience, the young master is always the one bullying others, so I can only worry about others."

System 06 acknowledged, 【Little Lin Qingtang truly sees the essence through your true nature.】

"Good boy," Lin Su said with a smile, patting his head.

Lin Su's teaching task was quite successful. Emperor Zhao Yang noticeably felt much less burdened than before. "My dear minister, you truly are my pillar of support, always relieving my worries. This time was quite easy, but in the future, if new officials come up, you must continue to dedicate yourself."

"Your Majesty, I really cannot form factions for personal gain," Lin Su said respectfully. "Please, grant me a way out."

He began to refuse again, and Emperor Zhao Yang said slowly, "You must be consistent in your work. Otherwise, it would show that your family's sincerity in removing their names from the registry is insufficient."

"A gentleman's promise is worth a thousand pieces of gold. Your Majesty is both a ruler and a gentleman, and would never break his word," Lin Su decisively cut off Emperor Zhao Yang's attempt to cheat him.

Emperor Zhao Yang squinted at him, "What if I truly refuse to honor it?"

Lin Su smiled calmly, "I cannot threaten Your Majesty by ramming my head into a pillar; I can only accept my fate."

Though he spoke of accepting his fate, his attitude suggested otherwise. The promise had already been given, and if it wasn't honored after the other party had fulfilled their part, trust would be lost. He would lose this pillar of support.

Historically, when the emperor commanded a minister's death, the minister had no choice but to comply. Yet, in his position, Lin Su was the first to hold such a great deterrent power over Emperor Zhao Yang.

"Fine, a promise made by me will naturally be kept, lest you think I often break my word," Emperor Zhao Yang said irritably, casting a sideways glance at him.

The imperial decree was issued, and Qing Tang knelt to receive it. As he accepted the decree, he remained kneeling like a clay statue, unable to return to his senses for a long time.

"Lin Qingtang, express your gratitude," Lin Su reminded him.

Lin Qingtang came back to his senses and knelt, saying, "Thank you for Your Majesty's great kindness."

The imperial decree, akin to the emperor's personal presence, required all members of the Lin family to kneel. Lin Qingtang, holding the decree, was overjoyed, while Father Lin and his stepmother had mixed feelings.

It was not a time of amnesty, yet the emperor personally issued a decree to remove Lin Qingtang's servile status, allowing him to be treated as a commoner eligible for the imperial examinations. It was difficult to shed a servile status, and it was unclear how much effort Lin Su had put in to achieve this.

With the emperor's decree, no one could use Lin Qingtang's former lowly status against him, as doing so would be seen as defying the emperor's orders and showing disrespect.

"Zhi Yuan is truly sincere towards Lin Qingtang. To obtain such an imperial favor shows the emperor's favor," the stepmother said with a smile. "In the future, you must be even more diligent and always loyal."

Regardless of her true thoughts, she had to maintain appearances, as Lin Su's threats were indeed deeply etched in her memory.

After the stepmother's comment, Lin Qingtang realized that he couldn't have achieved such a special pardon on his own; it must have been the young master's doing.

"Thank you, young master," Lin Qingtang said, his eyes sparkling as he gazed at Lin Su.

When Lin Su left the main hall, Lin Qingtang followed closely behind him.

Lin Su remained expressionless, but he could feel the gaze following him. As they descended the steps, Lin Su sidestepped and caught Lin Qingtang, who nearly tripped because he wasn't looking at the ground.

Lin Su laughed, "Even if you admire your young master, you should still pay some attention to where you're walking."

Lin Qingtang steadied himself using Lin Su's arm, his ears turning red. "I just think the young master is really amazing. Did the emperor make things difficult for you? You've worked so hard for me, I don't know how to repay you."

Lin Su led him towards his courtyard. Once inside, with the door and windows closed, Lin Su placed the imperial decree on the table. Seeing Lin Qingtang's confused expression, he said, "You said you didn't know how to repay me, right? Do you still remember what you learned at the brothel?"

Lin Qingtang no longer had the aura of someone from the brothel, but the experiences and training from that time were deeply ingrained in him, often haunting his dreams. "Young master, what do you mean?"

"Use all the skills you learned in the past on me. From tomorrow, it will be like saying goodbye to your past," Lin Su said in a dignified manner.

In truth, he wanted to see the obedient child exhibit his most wild side.

"Ah?" Lin Qingtang's mouth dropped open, and he turned as red as a boiled shrimp, wanting to curl up in embarrassment. "Young, young master..."

Lin Su sat down leisurely in a chair, spreading his hands and smiling, "Show your young master the sincerity of your gratitude."

The past memories were indelible. Even if they were painful, they were a part of who Lin Qingtang was. The more he tried to forget, the harder it was, only adding to his suffering. It was better to accept them and embrace his imperfect self.

Lin Qingtang swallowed, thinking of the young master's hardships, but all he could recall were their recent intimate moments, which filled him with shame. A gentleman refrains from certain actions, and to engage in debauchery during the day would certainly invite criticism. But the young master said he wasn't a gentleman, and Lin Qingtang didn't consider himself one either.

His pale fingers touched Lin Su's Adam's apple, brushing against it and causing an uncontrollable tickle.

Under Lin Su's encouraging gaze, Lin Qingtang continued.

The room was dim, shielding them from the sunlight and all the outside noise, and the air was filled with a strong fragrance until the sun rose high the next day.

An imperial decree was not something that could be hidden. The emperor personally issued a decree to remove someone's lowly status, which clearly indicated favoritism. The old ministers argued about this in the court for an hour.

The newly appointed officials stood quietly with Lin Su, observing silently.

When the argument finally ended, Emperor Zhao Yang stretched and let out a very noticeable yawn, "Have all my dear ministers finished speaking?"

The old ministers, who had been arguing fiercely, were so angry at the emperor's casual gesture that they almost fell over. They knew they could report anyone else for not listening, but they couldn't admonish the emperor directly.

All they could do was shout tearfully, "Your Majesty!"

"My ears are not deaf; I can hear you," Emperor Zhao Yang said loudly. "You are all my trusted ministers, but this matter was exchanged for my beloved minister's political achievements. Otherwise, he would be sitting in the position of Minister of Revenue now. There is no need to say more."

The old ministers were stunned, and Lin Su bowed to express his gratitude, "Everything I have is granted by Your Majesty. Thank you, Your Majesty, for your great kindness."

With the matter settled, no one in the court could find fault with Lin Su. Everything he had done was for the benefit of the country and its people.

Now, using his achievements to remove someone's low status was a minor matter in comparison. People in brothels and pleasure houses all envied Lin Qingtang.

"To have someone do so much for people like us, only Lord Lin could accomplish such a thing throughout history."

"Though he has a fondness for men, he is loyal to one person."

"Truly enviable."

In the Yang family residence in Qinghe County, Yang Cheng stepped into a courtyard and saw a person burning incense and painting by the window. "Lin Su has removed Lin Qingtang's low status."

Qing Xi, who had left the brothel house and renamed himself, taking Lin Su's surname and was now called Lin Qingtang, Qi Qingyi had known about this for some time.

Qi Qingyi continued painting, saying, "A master can allow a servant to return to a higher status, but what of it?"

Even with good status, one couldn't participate in the imperial examinations. The authorities would still remember the person's lowly past, just as he could never escape his status as a criminal slave.

Yang Cheng took a deep breath, feeling an inexplicable sense of satisfaction as he spoke, "No, Lin Su requested an imperial decree from the emperor to remove Lin Qingtang's low status. From now on, he is equal to other commoners and can take the imperial examinations."

He didn't know why he felt the need to tell Qi Qingyi this. In the past, he couldn't bear to see him sad, but now, seeing his distress brought him a strange sense of pleasure.

Qi Qingyi liked Lin Su, but Lin Su never took notice of him. What did it matter if he was unwilling or envious? He would have to spend his life in the Yang family residence, obediently being a caged bird.

Ink dripped onto the painting, forming a blurred, dirty blotch. Qi Qingyi turned his head and said, "Are you here to laugh at me?"

Why could that person do so much for a mere prostitute?

That lowly person was gradually escaping the mud, becoming a new person, while he had fallen into the dirt, destined to roll in the mud for the rest of his life.

Yang Cheng felt a twisted satisfaction mixed with piercing heartache. "Why can't you just look at me?"

"You say you love me, but in the past two years, have you ever thought of clearing my name? You say you love me, yet you keep me here, allowing people outside to slander and insult me."

Qi Qingyi's eyes were colder than ever. "Yang Cheng, stop fooling yourself. You don't love me. You only love yourself."

"You're right!" Yang Cheng swept the cups and saucers off the table, sending them crashing to the floor.

He rushed forward and grabbed Qi Qingyi's shoulders, his eyes bloodshot. "I only love myself, so I shouldn't have tolerated you for so long. You've been keeping yourself chaste for him, haven't you? A eunuch! Can he satisfy you? Can he make you feel good?"

Something was off about him. Qi Qingyi tried to shake off his hands but failed, struggling to escape the nauseating embrace. "Let go!!"

The sticky breath and hot air against his neck made him feel physically sick. "Get off!!!"

The door had been closed at some point, and the attendants outside kept their heads down, not daring to intervene despite the sounds of struggle, cursing, and ripping fabric from within.

Yang Cheng was the master of the Yang family. To the attendants, Qi Qingyi was not much more than a servant who lived by selling his looks. He ate and lived well thanks to the young master but contributed nothing, always putting on airs as if he were the master.

The door remained shut for a day and a night. When Yang Cheng finally emerged, he was covered in scratches, looking dejected despite having gotten what he wanted. "Call the doctor and take good care of him."

"Yes, sir," the attendants responded.

They knew that as long as their master hadn't discarded Qi Qingyi, they had to treat him as if he were the master.

Qi Qingyi developed a high fever, his body a wreck. Several times, he was kept alive only by ginseng. Eventually, he clawed his way back from the brink of death. He still wore the same clothes and walked with the same gait, but the attendants sensed an inexplicable change in him, a subtle and profound transformation.

At the Lin family residence in the capital, tranquility reigned.

The stepmother remembered Lin Su's threats, and now that Lin Qingtang had been freed from his low status by imperial decree, she no longer troubled him.

Instead, she focused on integrating herself into the circle of noblewomen, discovering its benefits.

For instance, those ladies envied her for having such a good son, one esteemed by the emperor. In Qinghe County, she was always the one seeking favors. In the capital, it was the other way around, with people seeking her out. The pleasure was incomparable.

Not bothering Lin Qingtang anymore meant he lived more comfortably in the household. Even if she had intended to disturb him, he was too busy to notice.

Having regained his eligibility to take the imperial exams, despite his age, he was determined to succeed. He prepared for the various levels of exams—county, provincial, metropolitan, and palace exams. The sheer volume of material made him want to study through the night, although that was easier imagined than done.

Other scholars, even those with wives, maintained harmonious households where their studies were encouraged, not when it was interrupted.

But in his case, every night when it was time to sleep, the young master didn’t take away his books.

Instead, he would lightly pinch Lin Qingtang’s earlobe or attract his gaze with a suggestive look, making his intentions clear.

If Lin Qingtang could resist temptation, it wouldn’t be an issue. But having once tasted the pleasures of it, he found it hard to focus when tempted. He couldn’t even muster the resolve to be angry about it.

As the county-level exam approached, his anxiety grew. "Young master, what if I fail?"

Failing the exam would be a disgrace to the young master.

Lin Su stroked his back reassuringly. "Don't worry. I'll give you a prediction of the exam topics to ensure you become the top candidate."

Lin Qingtang was puzzled. "Predict the topics? Is that even possible?"

“Years of exam questions follow certain patterns; there's no need to worry,” Lin Su said with a smile. “If I can't even help you pass the county-level exam, I should resign as your tutor.”

“I believe in you, young master,” Lin Qingtang said, reassured.

When Lin Qingtang entered the examination hall, he was initially tense. But upon seeing the exam questions, his eyes lit up. He began writing fluidly, without hesitation. When the results were announced, he indeed emerged as the top scholar.

“Young master, I did it! I’m a scholar!” Lin Qingtang had tried to maintain his composure when he first received the news in the outer courtyard, but the moment he saw Lin Su, he couldn’t contain himself. He ran and jumped into Lin Su’s arms, hugging his neck in sheer excitement.

Lin Su held him steady and smiled. “Congratulations, Scholar Lin. What reward would you like?”

“I want to drink Qionghua Pavilion’s plum wine,” Lin Qingtang said eagerly.

“Alright, you shall have it,” Lin Su laughed.

Plum wine was sweet and initially mild in its alcohol content, which is why Lin Qingtang had developed a liking for it after tasting it once. It was a signature offering of Qionghua Pavilion.

While Lin Su could have replicated it, he chose not to undermine the establishment’s business. Instead, he would occasionally buy it for Lin Qingtang when he craved it, which kept the wine on his mind.

“I want to drink to my heart’s content,” Lin Qingtang said, clearly in high spirits.

Lin Su chuckled. “You can drink to your heart’s content for becoming a scholar. But what will you do when you pass the next exam?”

“If I pass the imperial exams, I will have my own way of celebrating,” Lin Qingtang replied, clearly having something in mind.

Lin Su didn’t press further. He ordered six jars of plum wine from Qionghua Pavilion and paired it with sweet pastries for Lin Qingtang to enjoy.

Lin Su himself preferred Autumn Moon White and refrained from touching Lin Qingtang’s plum wine.

At first, Lin Qingtang was drinking from his cup, but later he started pouring directly from the wine pot into his mouth, muttering poetry verses with moist eyes, losing his usual docility. "Young Master, do I have... the demeanor of a scholar?"

He might not have the demeanor of a literary man, but he was certainly displaying the demeanor of a drunken reveler. However, with his youthful and adorable appearance, he was quite different from other drunkards.

Four out of the six jars of plum wine were already gone, and Lin Qingtang's eyes had become misty. Plum wine was sweet and fragrant, but its kick was potent.

Lin Su only needed a sniff to know that Lin Qingtang didn’t drink much alcohol. After four jars, he had lost all his rationality.

Lin Su took a sip from his cup, and with Qing Tang's eyes watery and adorable like a little wet puppy, he reached out and touched Lin Su's face. "Where did you come from... beautiful person, how did you come to... look like my young master?"

He was speaking with a slurred tongue, behaving completely differently from when he was sober.

Lin Su chuckled and replied, "I came from heaven."

"I see... that explains it! I was wondering why you are so... endearing," Lin Qingtang said as he cupped Lin Su's face, seemingly examining it, then planted a kiss on Lin Su's cheek. "Since it's a... dream, no one will... know."

"Yes, indeed, no one will know. A kiss is not much. You can do something else," Lin Su said, holding Lin Qingtang's hand and placing it on his own chest, smiling.

Lin Qingtang stared at it intently, holding his breath. He gulped and said hoarsely, "Indeed... it's a dream."

Otherwise, how could the young master behave so recklessly?

But the young master is indeed unrestrained when he closes the door...

Regardless, in the face of beauty if he can’t eat him, he would be worse than a beast!

Lin Qingtang's wandering hands were in action, amidst the fragrance of wine, they indulged in a night of passion, truly reveling together.

The next morning, as Lin Qingtang opened his eyes, he saw a bowl of hangover soup placed in front of him. He drank it subconsciously, feeling sore all over. His voice was hoarse as he asked, "What happened last night?"

"Nothing, you fell asleep after getting drunk," Lin Su said calmly.

Lin Qingtang subconsciously breathed a sigh of relief, then looked at the mottled marks on his arm and asked, "What about this?"

"Little Lin Qingtang’s sleeping was too cute, I couldn't resist," Lin Su replied, still keeping a straight face.

He didn’t even hold back when he was drunk. What happened to the young master, who had the demeanor of a nobleman? Lin Qingtang's face visibly reddened, but he didn't know what to say.

Telling the young master not to behave like this next time would definitely not work, but allowing it... he couldn't help but feel that the young master's image would deteriorate further.

"What do you want to say?" Lin Su asked, handing him the empty bowl.

Lin Qingtang hesitated, then finally spoke up, "Could the young master refrain from doing such things next time when I am sober?"

"It's not impossible," Lin Su smiled and agreed.

Lin Qingtang breathed a sigh of relief.

Until one day when he was drunk and halfway through being fed hangover soup, he regained his senses. He looked at his hands and the disheveled young master, then at his own intact clothes, feeling the urge to bury himself in a hole.

Feeling the clothes in his hands burning, he tried to calm himself down as he said, "Young Master, do you believe that it was the clothes that acted first?"

Lin Su pressed his hand against Qing Tang's neck, burying his head in his own chest. "If I said it was your head that acted first, would you believe it?" he asked.

Lin Qingtang didn't know where to look, so he simply surrendered and lay on Lin Su's chest. "I won't drink anymore in the future!" he declared.

How innocent were the young master's lies back then! Why did he have to be so understanding?!

Lin Su patted his head and said, "Recently, I had the servants make some wine-flavored candies. Looks like you won't have the chance to taste them."

At that moment, Lin Qingtang really wanted to bite him. "Young Master!"

"I am here," Lin Su chuckled.

It really makes people lose their temper

The change in Lin's father's attitude towards Lin Qingtang was noticeable after the preliminary examination.

However, he often hesitated to speak and eventually just sighed, saying nothing more.

After the preliminary examination came the provincial examination. Lin Qingtang was initially uncomfortable with Lin Su's way of teaching taking exams because, according to the young master's methods, as long as one made a little effort, everyone would pass.

But following his own clumsy methods, Lin Qingtang felt unsure and believed he was just wasting his time.

"Am I teaching you to cheat? If you refuse to learn the legitimate way, are you really becoming as foolish as Xi Kang says?" Lin Su chuckled.

Embarrassed, Lin Qingtang smiled and followed Lin Su's clever methods, which, while they were indeed clever, also demanded neat handwriting, formal writing, and elaborate expressions.

Each time, they would study from sunrise to sunset without rest.

During the provincial examination, Lin Su accompanied Lin Qingtang as a rest companion. The provincial examination, also known as the Autumn Weir, lasted for nine days and consisted of three sections.

In previous years, the weather had been hot, and many examinees suffered from heatstroke despite having water basins to cool down.

However, this year, each examination room was equipped with ice blocks, a thoughtful gesture.

This was because in recent years, the cost of ice had decreased, making it affordable even for commoners. Additionally, Lin Su had petitioned the emperor, arguing that civil officials should not be disadvantaged by the summer heat during the selection of talents.

Understanding his point, the emperor not only provided ice blocks for cooling but also emphasized the importance of physical fitness for scholars. He reminded them not to neglect physical training, as talent alone was insufficient without physical strength.

The fact that examinees were treated so well was a testament to the wealth of the nation.

Furthermore, the newly appointed Minister of Revenue, Lin, had discovered a method for making ice in summer, which garnered much gratitude from the people.

There were rumors in court and among the people that this initiative was due to Lin's own family member participating in the examination. However, since the examinees benefited from it, there was no need for complaints.

"After the provincial examination, the emperor summoned Lin Su and asked, "Would you consider this an abuse of public resources for personal gain?"

Lin Su respectfully replied, "This is Your Majesty's compassion for talent, extending to all. How could I have any personal motives?"

He's just selfish. Despite the sweltering heat in the temporary quarters, he insists on staying there for nine days. It's truly a wonder he hasn't died or shed his skin. Since he has the ability to solve this problem, there's no reason for him not to do so.

Emperor Zhao Yang also values talented individuals. Although he felt sorry for him in previous years, he lacked the financial means. Now that he has the resources, naturally, he wants to do things that benefit the people. It's just that sometimes, seeing Lin Su's life going too smoothly, he wants to say a few words to him.

"Never mind, among all our courtiers, you are the most reasonable." Emperor Zhao Yang waved his hand to dismiss him, then asked after the person left, "Are you sure the slanderous words in the market were spread by Lin Su himself?"

The eunuch replied, "Lord Li didn't deliberately conceal it. We found out right away. We just don't know why he did it." The courtiers all treasured their feathers; how could they expose their own flaws like Lord Lin did? It's really puzzling.

Emperor Zhao Yang chuckled and said, "You don't understand. He's afraid I'll think he's achievements are too great and that he might be a threat to me. Am I the kind of emperor who can't tolerate others?"

"Your Majesty welcomes advice, naturally, you have a broad mind," the eunuch smiled.

Harmony between ruler and subjects doesn't necessarily mean they all agree on everything. Even if they're confused on the surface, they can understand each other in their hearts.

Although Emperor Zhao Yang occasionally admonished Lin Su, Lin Su's position remained secure.

The provincial examinations ended, and Lin Qingtang became the top scorer.

There was much discussion in the court about Lin Su's abuse of power for personal gain, partly fueled by jealousy and partly by Lin Qingtang's achievement. They didn't dare bring up Lin Qingtang's past, but there were always subtle implications.

The court was in turmoil again, and Emperor Zhao Yang had a headache. After everyone had expressed their opinions, he asked, "What does Lord Lin think should be done?"

"Your Majesty, I am extremely upset and would never dare to abuse my power for personal gain. If my colleagues do not believe me, then let's make the top scorers' essays from each province public. Since it's not a secret, let the scholars of the world evaluate them. This will also allow me to prove my innocence," Lin Su said calmly.

The old ministers naturally didn't believe Lin Su's household could produce any outstanding essays, but his confident attitude made them uneasy.

Emperor Zhao Yang decisively said, "Let's do as Lord Lin suggests, so that no one can accuse me of favoritism towards him."

The old ministers, “...”

Your Majesty, you are already showing favoritism towards him.

The essays of the top scorers from each province were posted for public review, attracting much commentary. The provincial examinations were rigorous, and the Emperor's laws were strict, so the posted essays were all excellent works, earning widespread praise.

Among them, Lin Qingtang's essay was the best. The heated discussions reached Emperor Zhao Yang, making him frown frequently as he read the comments.

"Is there something wrong, Your Majesty?" the eunuch asked anxiously.

Emperor Zhao Yang sighed, "The problem is that there's nothing wrong at all."

The essay was indeed excellent, with traces of Lin Su's influence, but its style was different. It wasn't merely rote learning but was practical and substantive.

Such an essay could easily rank in the top tier even in the palace examination.

When Emperor Zhao Yang had earlier pardoned Lin Su, he thought it wouldn't be surprising if Lin Su's teachings imbued some literary talent. Now he realized it was more than just a bit of talent.

Moreover, Lin Su had shown remarkable results in training new officials, proving that if he were a teacher, he would be an excellent one.

This sentiment was shared by many. If the essays hadn't been posted, some would still believe the autumn examination officials were intimidated by Lin Su's power. But now that the essays were posted, with each word meticulously crafted, many were genuinely impressed.

"To teach someone to this level, Lord Lin is indeed exceptionally talented."

"He would make an excellent teacher, though it's a pity he never takes on students."

"If one could become his disciple, it would indeed be a swift rise to prominence. But Lord Lin has no disciples, so how could he be accused of forming connections for personal gain?" The scholars discussed fervently, even petitioning Emperor Zhao Yang through the Imperial Academy, hoping Lord Lin would give a few lectures.

Before they could react, Lin Su was appointed as the Crown Prince's Tutor by Emperor Zhao Yang and brought into the palace to teach the young prince.

The Crown Prince was only five years old, the eldest legitimate son, while the younger legitimate son was three.

Additionally, there were four companions, all from noble families, all at the age when they were most mischievous and troublesome. Lin Su was tasked with teaching the Crown Prince and these companions as well.

"Beloved minister, teaching one is the same as teaching several. With your ability, you can surely nurture an excellent heir to the throne," Emperor Zhao Yang said with a smile.

Even though Lin Su held a high position and wielded significant power, the emperor was still the emperor. Lin Su replied with a smile, "Your Majesty truly treats me as if I have the strength of ten men. If one day the toil becomes too much, I might have to resign and return home."

No matter how excellent the boss, he still has the nature of a greedy landlord.

Emperor Zhao Yang's pleased expression faltered for a moment. Other officials flattered him and were eager for promotions, but only Lin Su threatened to resign whenever things didn't go his way. Was this any way to behave?!

But if Lin Su left, the days of freely spending money would be over, and the busy, candle-burning nights of handling state affairs would return. He really couldn't let him go.

Emperor Zhao Yang smiled, "Beloved minister, if you need to support someone dear to you, money is indispensable. Hard work pays off, and if you teach well, I might grant you two a legitimate marriage, making it official."

"I think assisting Your Majesty in conquering Xiyu would be a quicker way to achieve that," Lin Su replied. He wasn't a mule to be led by a carrot on a stick. Whatever he wanted, he would strive for it himself.

In the northwest frontier, occasional troubles arose like pesky cockroaches that couldn't be eradicated, causing much frustration.

Emperor Zhao Yang had the ambition to conquer it, but having just recently secured the southwest, the northwest skirmishes seemed minor in comparison.

The conquest of the southwest was largely due to Lin Su's efforts. During the campaign, Emperor Zhao Yang had provided ample supplies, money, and horses whenever needed, experiencing an unprecedented sense of ease.

The northwest, therefore, couldn't be addressed without Lin Su, the financial powerhouse, or it would surely end in failure.

Success in the northwest required Lin Su's efforts, but the matter of the Crown Prince's education couldn't be neglected either.

Emperor Zhao Yang said, "Beloved minister, you have no children of your own, so this is a chance for you to enjoy the pleasures of family life. My princes are undoubtedly the best children in the world."

Good enough to render the entire palace unable to function properly, needing constant attention.

"How could I dare to treat Your Majesty's sons as my own," Lin Su responded, feigning terror.

"Once a teacher, forever a father. You need not be anxious, beloved minister," Emperor Zhao Yang replied, clearly determined to hold him to this.

When an emperor decides to be obstinate, there is truly no recourse for a minister except to resign.

Lin Su wasn't incapable of teaching children; he simply couldn't allow Emperor Zhao Yang to take everything for granted.

The five-year-old Crown Prince, dressed in his princely robes, looked genuinely adorable as he respectfully performed the disciple's salute. Coupled with the other tender-faced young companions, one might think they'd stepped into a nest of cuteness.

However, Lin Su had inquired about these mischievous children beforehand and knew they caused chaos throughout the entire palace, making them extremely difficult to manage.

To make children obedient, mere adult words wouldn't suffice. Lin Su crouched down and said, "Today is our first lesson. We won't be learning calligraphy or the Analects of Confucius. How about I tell you a story instead?"

"If the story isn't good, there will be a punishment," the young Crown Prince declared, lifting his chin with pride. It was clear that Emperor Zhao Yang doted on his children.

Lin Su nodded, "Very well."

The story he told was unlike any heard in the streets, it was vivid and full of childlike language, captivating the group of children who had initially planned to cause trouble and receive a scolding.

When Lin Su was appointed as the Tutor to the Crown Prince, many great scholars were ready to mock him, considering that even they couldn't keep these children quiet. Noble children couldn't be disciplined harshly, and sometimes they even pulled out their beards in play, making their lives miserable.

However, after three days of Lin Su's teaching, not only did nothing go wrong, but news spread through the palace that the previously troublesome children were now quietly practicing their writing.

Not only did the scholars think they were hearing things, but even Emperor Zhao Yang doubted his ears: "What has happened? How is it that Yu’er is so well-behaved?"

The eunuch, who had the palace's first-hand news, reported, "It is said that Lord Lin has set up a reward system. If the children complete their tasks, they receive a little red flower. If they collect five, they get to hear a story that no one else knows."

"What kind of story is so captivating?" Emperor Zhao Yang asked, his curiosity piqued.

The eunuch replied, bowing his head, "Apparently, they are mythological tales from a book called 'Shan Hai Jing.' Lord Lin even draws illustrations for each story, which are strange and wonderful, and the Crown Prince loves them."

Emperor Zhao Yang, intrigued, looked at the Crown Prince's cherished drawings and was even tempted to take them for himself.

The eunuch quickly interjected, "Your Majesty mustn't. The Crown Prince would cry."

Lin Su's new duties kept him busier than before, but he knew how to delegate tasks. Having organized the Ministry of Revenue's affairs smoothly, his subordinates could handle the routine work without needing much of his time.

Those who are capable tend to take on more work. In fact, he is somewhat similar to Emperor Zhao Yang. However, unlike the emperor, his subordinates do not complain; instead, they feel that their superior's delegation of authority is a sign of trust.

The year after the provincial examination was the metropolitan examination. Lin Qingtang continued his studies at home, and upon hearing that Lin Su had become the Crown Prince's Tutor, he was not as astonished as before.

According to him, "If the young master wants to accomplish something, there is nothing he cannot achieve."

His words were not solely a reflection of Lin Su's talents but also of his dedication and hard work. For when the young master sets out to learn something, he starts from the basics, meticulously considering each step, practicing diligently, and only stopping once he has mastered it.

However, Lin Qingtang was still happy: "Young master, did you meet the Crown Prince? It's said that the Empress is as beautiful as a fairy, so her children must be lovely as jade."

Lin Su paused for a moment while removing his outer robe and asked, "Do you like children?"

Lin Qingtang, who loved and respected him, did not want to hide anything from him. "If I could bear children, I wouldn't let the young master be without heirs."

Yet, he could not bear the thought of the young master having children with another woman. He couldn't even accept the young master being too close to another woman. If he were a woman, he would surely be extremely jealous.

"I have no particular desire for offspring," Lin Su said, tapping Lin Qingtang's forehead. "This is the truth, I am not just saying this to comfort you. If you like children, someday I can bring the emperor's two children for you to play with."

Lin Qingtang instinctively covered his forehead, finding Lin Su's words difficult to digest. "Play? They are the emperor's children. How can they be treated so casually? If the emperor finds out, wouldn't he punish us?"

"Then how about we adopt a child?" Lin Su mused, stroking his chin. "But you must think carefully. If we adopt a child, I will have to fulfill my responsibilities as a father, and my time will be occupied. I may not be able to spend as much time with you."

"No!" Lin Qingtang immediately clung to his arm, rejecting the idea.

He did love well-behaved children, but he couldn't accept another person coming between him and the young master. He couldn't tolerate anyone taking away the young master's attention.

After hesitating for a while, under Lin Su's smiling gaze, he sheepishly said, "How about occasionally bringing the Crown Prince over to play..."

Staying by the young master's side, he had become so audacious. Such impudence. All his guilt vanished when he saw two little children holding hands.

"Greetings to the Crown Prince and the Second Prince," Lin Qingtang said, bowing.

The Crown Prince tilted his head and suddenly asked, "Are you the master's wife?"

Lin Qingtang was stunned, his cheeks turning slightly red. "If the master you're referring to is Lord Lin, then yes, I am."

"If you're the master's wife, why do you call Lord Lin 'young master'? Shouldn't you call him 'husband'?" the Crown Prince continued, his young age making him naturally blunt, much like his father. The little dark-skinned boy asked this innocently.

Lin Qingtang glanced at Lin Su, his face turning as red as a tomato.
